Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. TAPLIN, OF HAMMOND, NEW YORK.
MANNER OF CONSTRUCTING THE MASTER-WHEELS 0F PORTABLE HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2,407, dated December 30, 1841; Reissued January 24, 1854, No. 256.
To @ZZ 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. TAPLIN, of Hammond, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Large or Master The-el of Horse-Powers; andI do hereby declare that the Jfollowing is a full and clear and exact description of the construction of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure 2` represents the top of the rim of said wheel, and Fig. l the cogs upon the segments, these segments are fastened together by clamps; which may be easily removed thus rendering the larger of wheels portable.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation; I construct my wheel of any of the known forms in two or more sections or segments A, B, in the end of which I make a dowel pin C to hold them from slipping when united, six
inches from the ends I bore a hole D to receive the clamps E which are made of two feet seven-eighths inch round iron, in the shape of brackets, which must be driven in from the outside of the rim or segments, their object is to hold the segments firmly in their place while in operation, and as they may be easily removed, the wheel can be conveniently taken to pieces and thus rendered portable.
I do not claim as my invention the making of a large cog wheel for a horse power in segments; but
What I do claim as my invention and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The making of the large or master wheel of a portable horse power in segments when united by clamps as herein described.
JOHN A. TAPLIN Witnesses HENRY KING, AMos lNEBsTER.
