Description

STATES' 'PATENT OFFICE.
ORRIN STRAIGHT, OF LYCOMING COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
HORSE-POWER FOR DRIVING MACHINERY.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 874, dated August 3, 1838.
TofzZZ whom t may concern Be it known ,that I, ORRIN STRAIGHT, of
improvement in portable inclined revolvingfloor horse-powers, by which the slats of the floor of said horsepower are secured together and suppo-rted in a more perfect manner than heretofore; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full `and eXact description thereof.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l, gives a perspective view of the whole machine, the slats being connected together, by my improved cheek hinge, to'be presently described, and which is the only part to which I make any claim as inventor. The slats a, a, which constitute the endless floor, may be sustained upon friction rollers b, b, constructed in any of the known ways in which friction rollers are made and used. Friction rollers, if preferred, may be added to Asustain the weight of the floor, beneath the drums c, c, in its passage from one to the other. The power obtained, also, may be conveyed by bands, or cog gearing, to any machinery which it is intended to drive.
My cheek hinge, with the manner of affixing the slats thereto, is shown in Figs. 2, and 3.
Fig. 2, is a piece of malleable iron in which the end of each slat is to be received, its length being equal to the width of said slats.
The bottom of the slat rests on the fiat surface d, and its edges are notched to receive the cheeks e, e, and their ends are flush with the edge f, f, of the plate d, being secured in place by screw bolts passing through the slats and plates. There. are projections g, g, formed on the cheeks e, e, which are to have a bearing upon the edges of the straps which constitute the other portion of the cheek hinge; 7L, is a joint pin which is to pass through holes in the ends of the straps, and secured there by nuts.
Fig. 3, shows the cheek hinge, as affixed to the slats of the endless floor; z', c', are straps of iron which receive the joint pins, l1., It; and upon the upper edges of which the projecting parts g, g, of the cheeks e, e, rest, when the slats are brought into such a position as to form a plane with cach other.
It will be seen that a powerful bearing for each of the slats will thus be obtained, and this may be increased to any desirable extent by depressing the line ofthe joint pins to a greater distance below the bearing of the projections g, g, on the tops of the straps, i, i.
Having thus fully described the construction and manner of using my horse power cheek hinge, I do hereby declare that what I claim as my own invention, and desire toV secure by Letters Patent, is
The manner in which I have connected and combined the parts thereof together;
that is to say, the manner in which the pro-` j ections of the pieces which receive the slats, are made to bear upon the edges of the straps, as herein fully described.
