HENRY S. BREWINGTON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE ALMA BUTTON COMPANY OF BALTIMORE CITY.
GARMENT-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,541, dated April 7, 1903.
Application filed geptember 20, 1902. Serial No. 124,139. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, HENRY S. BREWINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to waistband-hooks for trousers; and the object of the same is to provide a device of this character which may be made from a small quantity of sheet metal and which will be provided with means for securing the hook firmly between two thicknesses of the material from which the fly of the trousers is formed and which will be strong, durable, and efficient in use.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of my invention secured to a piece of fabric. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hook detached from the fabric or material. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line a: a Fig. 1. Fig. at is a longitudinal section of a modified form of hook which I may use.
In carrying out my invention I cut from a substantially rectangular piece of sheet metal of the proper gage the hook member 1 of a fastener, as shown in the drawings. The bill of the hook is cut from within the body of the metal blank and is bent upward at 2 and backward at 3 to occupy a position substantially parallel with the body of the hook. In cutting the blank a small portion of the metal is removed from within the bill of the hook to form the opening 4 and provide a light skeleton hook member. A front cross-bar 5-and a rear cross bar 6,connected by the two side bars 7 7, constitute the body of the hook, and these parts lie in the same plane, the bill of the hook lying in, a parallel plane. The front cross-bar 5 has a substantially straight outer edge 8, over which the material 9 is folded, as shown in Fig. 1, thus preventing the withdrawal of the hook under ordinary strains when secured by stitches, as shown.
The body of the hook is provided with stitch-holes 10 10 near the rear corners of said body portion.
In securing the hook to the material the edge of the fabric 9 is lapped over the front crossbar 5 and secured in place by the stitches a. The body of the hook at the rear is secured in place by stitches I), passed through the eyes 10 and through the fabric 9.
The modification illustrated in Fig. 4 consists in bending back the edge 0 of the mate rialto form a smooth lapped edge to prevent the cross-bar from cutting the material 9.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my hook can be formed with but slight waste of metal, that a strong efficient hook is provided, and that when secured to the material at the three points illustrated considerable strain can be exerted upon the hook without detaching it from the material.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is 1. A garment-hook comprising a front crossbar, having a straight front edge, a rear crossbar having stitch-holes at its ends, and opposite side bars, all lying in the same plane, and
a hook or bill cut from within the body of the blank and bent up to lie in a plane parallel to the cross-bars and side bars, said hook member being cut from sheet metal, substantially as described.
2. A garment-hook consisting of a rectangular sheet-metal blank having a doubled front cross-bar having a smooth, straight front edge, a rear cross-bar having stitchholes, two side bars, all lying in the same plane, and a bill or hook cut from within the body of the blank and bent up to lie in a plane parallel to the cross-bars and side bars, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY S. BREWINGTON.
