BUS'JLESS BUCKLE.
Application filed July 15 To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat MICHAEL HAWIE, citizen of'the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairlield and State of Connecticut, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rustlessj Buckles, of which the following is a specification. o The present invention relates to improvements in buckles, and more particularly to the type of bucklesknown as rustless back buckles.
An object of the invention is to provide a buckle of this character, which may be s iniply'and economically constructed of two pieces of sheet metal, stamped to shape, and in which a comparative saving of both the metal going into the buckle, and the web secured to and co-operating therewith, may vbe effected. A further object is to allow the secure fastening of.the web, without stitching, or the use of other fastening means, other than that incorporated in the two parts of the buckle.
Still furtherlobjects consist in effectually securing, the web to the buckle, so that it will withstand excessive strains, and .in'
which the web will not readily become worn or chafed.
With the above and other objects in view, an embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in'the claims.

The frame15 is in. the form of a bar havingparallelnpper and lower edges 16 and 17 and is provided at its ends with cars 18 and19, bent at right angles and perforated at 20 and-21 to receive and pivotally supportthe pin-tles 13 and ltof the clamping lever. i
A series of spaced V-shaped teeth 22, hav. ing their points directed toward theupper edge 16-, and forming corresponding shaped openings 23 in the bar'arej struck from frame, and are bent outwardly and upwardly, the points being spaced away from the surface f he bar, before attachmentofthe web, as clearly. shown in Fig. 1.

The web 24: is engaged with the buckle by inserting its end 25 beneath the teeth 22,
which are thereupon swedged, in a suitable manner, inwardly at their. points toward the openings 28, to securely grip the end of the web, which is exposed at the inner sidev of the frame, at its portions engaged in the openings 23. The web'is then folded downwardly, sothat the points of the teeth 22 are directed into the bight of the fold, to there by more securely grip the web, under ex cessive strains; It is then passed through the cast-off 26, and the upper reach-2'2 is inserted through the buckle, between the frame and the clamping lever, the latter being,
then closed, so that its toothed edge 12 en gages the web, and presses it firmly against the inner face of the frame; the portions directly engaged by the points of the teeth 12,
being tightly and frictionally engaged with the portions of the end of the web exposed grip the same proportionately to such strains.
I have illustrated and described a pre ferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A buckle comprising a sheet metal frame member and a lever member, said frame member including a back having forwardly projecting ears and a series of spaced apart inverted V-shaped cuts forming teeth, all of said teeth being struck outwardly from the back in a direction. opposed to the direction of said ears, whereby the inner surface of said back between said ears is free of projections. the pointsofsaid teeth extending substantially in the same direction upwardly as the apices of the cuts and being spaced from the outer surface of the back to permit the insertion of a Web having its edge inserted downwardly between the teeth and the outer surface of the back and abutted by the base of the teeth, the end portion of the web being grippingly engaged by said. teeth, and having portions exposed through the openings formed by the teeth at the inner side of the back, the

2. A buckle comprising a sheet metal frame-member and lever-member, said frame member including a back having forwardly projected ears and a series of spaced apart teeth struck up from the back intermediate its upper and lower edges, extending rearwardly, and forming a series of openings in the back, said teeth adapted to grippingly engage the end of a web inserted beneath said teeth at the outer side of the framemember, portions of the web being exposed through said openings at the inner side of the frame, the lever-member being pivoted in the ears of the frame-member and including an operating arm and a clamping arm arranged at an angle thereto and having a series of teeth arranged in opposed relation to said series of openings in the back and adapted in the operation of the lever to engage a reach of the web, inserted between the frame and lever, with the portions of the a web exposed through said openings.
