My present invention relates to an improvement on the marking tag described and shown in my U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,778,031 dated October 14, 1930.

It has been found that when the wire clip and the tag proper are separated or sprung apart to enable the user to slip the marking tag over the edge of an article the card or Bristol board of the tag proper is easily bent or broken across so that the clip would not function properly in co-operation with the back of the tag and firmly hold the marking tag to the goods.

The present invention is intended to overcome this defect in a simple, cheap and unobtrusive manner.

The tag or ticket proper 1 is made of any desired material such as card or Bristol board of any desired size, shape or color and may have any desired matter printed thereon.

The lnetal clip 2 is primarily a U-sliaped piece of wire having the bottom of the U outflared at 3. The free ends of the U- shaped clip are pushed through the tag near an edge thereof and the ends bent up at 4 4. The clip is next bent outwardly at 5 5 so that the tag 1 is firmly clinched between the part-s 4 4 and 5 5. The U- shaped clip is next bent downwardly at 6-6 over the back of the tag 1, but with a slight space 7 between the wire and the tag at the edge of the latter and with the base of the flared portion resting firmly against the back of the tag 1 as best shown in Fig. 3.

The reinforcement consists of a short piece of wire 8 which is pushed into the body of the tag 1 from the edge to which the wire clip is secured at the median line of the wire clip and is buried in the card or Bristol board. The length of this reinforcing wire is suchthat its lower end extends approximately to the bottom ofthe U-portion of the Wire clip. Y

When thel wire clip and tag proper are sprung apart or separatedto slip the mark ing tag over the edge of the goods the rein forcement 8- stiffensthe tag proper so that it will not crease or crack but will remain in a fiat condition with which the loop or U-portion of the wire clip co-operates to hold the marking tag firmly on the goods.

In use the outflared portion of the clip is slipped over the edge of the goods to be marked and the latter are firmly gripped between the wire clip and the ticket.

By the use of my invention no holes are made in thegoods and the marking tags may be used on impenetrable objects such as sheet metal ware and the tag proper always remains flat, uncreased and unbroken.

I claim 1. In a marking tag, a ticket proper and a substantially U-shaped clip having its free ends passing through the ticket from front to rear near an edge thereof, the free ends bent upwardly on the back of the ticket and the U-shaped portion bent upwardly on the face of the ticket whereby the clip is clinched to the ticket, and the U-shaped portions then bent downwardly over the edge of the ticket in contact with the back thereof, and a reinforcing wire within the ticket extending in the median line of the clip from the top edge of the ticket to a point substantially under the bottom of the U-portion of the clip.

2. In a marking tag, a ticket proper and a substantially U-shaped clip having its free ends passing through the ticket from front to back near an edge thereof, the free ends bent upwardly on the back of the ticket and the U-shaped portion bent upwardly on the face of the ticket whereby the clip is clinched to the ticket and the U-shaped portion then bent downwardly over the edge of the ticket in contact with the back thereof, the bottom of the U-shaped clip being outwardly flared from the body of the ticket, and a reinforcing wire within the ticket extending in the median line of the clip from the top edge of the ticket to a point substantially under the bottom portion of the clip.
