` PATN TED 72417 '0120121861y 'geiten gestes intent @fge ELIZUR POND, CF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT. I
Letters Patent No. 72,417, dated December 17, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN STIRRUPS.
@the Stimuli ruimt tu iu time tsttert atmt mit making nf tigt aan.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ELIZUR POND, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a. new Improvement in Stirrnps; und I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the Same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, n front view,
Figure 2 a vertical section, end in Figure?) a. transverse section on line x This invention relates to an improvement in stirrups, such as are used for common riding-snddles, and consists in aithin metal shell, which forms the outside of the Astirrup, {lled with an Indie-rubber or elastic lining, and so as to project inward from the shell, so that the footwill not come in lcontact with the metal, and the nature of the lining will prevent the foot slipping in the stirrup.
In order to the clenr understanding of my invention, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The form of the stirrup may be in accordance with the class of saddles it is designed to lbe used upon, or the taste of the manufacturer may dictate.
a, the shell, I form from she'et metal or thin casting, making it Het across the base, and attaching upon the top en eye, A, by which the stirrup is secured to the strap. Within the shell is placed n filling, b, of rubber, extending across the base, and up both sides over the foot, and is suiciently thick to project in beyond the edge of the metal shell, as denoted in the drawings. It is formed in a. single piece, and forced into the shell, its own elasticity serving to securely h old it therein. Across the bottom, the filling muy be roughened in any convenient or desirable manner.
Therefore, when in use, the foot rest-s upon theelastic surface, and cannot slip thereon; und the sides of the stirrup, being alike elastic, do not hurt the foot, and the stirrup is much lighter than the ordinary metal stirrup, and generally, by my improvement, all the objections existing to the common metal stirrup are entirely overcome. i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi A stirrup, consisting of the metal shell a, provided with un eye, A, and the lining b, the whole constructed substantially as herein set forth.
ELIZUR POND. A Witnesses:
JOHN H. SHUMWAY, A. J. TIBBITs.
