Description
PATENTED MAR. 31, l903.
W. R. HAMPER. COMBINED MATCH SAFE, PAPER HOLDER, AND CIGARETTE MACHINE.
' APPEIUATION FILED DEC 24 1902.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER R. HAMPER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED MATCH-SAFE, PAPER-HOLDER, vAND CIGARETTE-MACHINE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,863, dated March 31,1903.
Application filed December 24, 1902. Serial No. 136,446. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER R. HAMPER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at De the following to bea full, clear, and exact de-,
scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin a combined match-safe, paper-holder, and cigarette-machine, shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly set forth in the following specification and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing the general arrangement of the interior. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the same.
The object of my invention is to construct a pocket cigarette-machine in which are provided receptacles for cigarette-paper, matches, 850., so arranged as to be inclosed within the body of the machine, but separated from the tobacco, so that the paper cannot be stained by the tobacco or the flavor of the tobacco be afiected by the presence of the matches.
Referring to the letters of reference shown in the drawings, A is the ,body portion, designed to receive the tobacco, and B is a cover hinged to the body portion and pro vided with apocketb to receive cigarette-paper. I
C is a tube or mandrel secured to the Wall of the box or body portion and opening into the same.
D is a plunger, preferably formed of a strip of sheet metal and given a spiral form,.as shown. To the plunger D is secured an operating-rod cl, which projects through an opening in the opposite wall of the box and to which is secured a ring or knob for convenience in handling. The shoulder produced by the engagement of the plunger with the operating-rod serves to limit the movement of the plunger in one direction when it comes in contact with the wall of the box, While the ring or knob limits its movement in the opposite direction.
To form a cigarette, the paper is rolled around the mandrel C, one end of the paper being turned over the end of the mandrel to close the opening, while the edge is moistened to fix and complete the tube. The box being closed, the plunger is then reciprocated, which packs the tobacco into the tube and at the same time drives it 0d the mandrel.
E is a'leaf hinged to the box and designed when closed to cover the tobacco contained in the body portion A. To the upper side of the leaf E is secured a pocket eto receive matches. This pocket is provided with a "roughened surface, as .shown, to be used for striking the matches on.
F shows a pad of cigarette-paper, and G des ignates the matches.
By the arrangement shown the flavor of the tobacco is not affected by the presence of matches and the cigarette-paper is protected from both the matches and tobacco.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an article of the class described, a re ceptacle for tobacco, a mandrel secured to and communicating therewith, aplunger adapted to guide and force the tobacco through said mandrel, a leaf portion hinged within said receptacle and provided with a suitable pocket for the reception of matches or other article, substantially as described.
'2.' In an article of the class described, a re 'ceptacle for tobacco, a mandrel secured to and communicating therewith, a plunger adapted toguide and force the tobacco through said mandrel, a leaf portion hinged within the said receptacle provided with a suitable pocket for the reception of matches or other article and a separate pocket secured to the inside of the cover, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses- WALTER R. HAMPER.
Witnesses:
S. E. THOMAS, H. E. VILLERST.
