UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
HARRY A. J. BROWN, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO HOMER. C. DRAKE, OF NEWCASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED CALIPERS, COMPASSES, DIVIDERS, 800.
Eli-EGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 723,237, dated March 24, 1903.
Application filed May 24, 1902. Serial No. 108,853, (No model.)
T on whom it may concern i Be it known that I, HARRY A. J. BROWN, 'a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the countyof Allegheny and State .5 of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cali- I pers, Compasses, Dividers, &c. ;and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such to as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
. My invention relates to improvements in combination-tools, and has for its object to provide a'device of this character which may be readily adapted for use either as a com- 0 the device for different purposes.
pass, caliper, divider, &c.
It has for afurther object to providea selflubrieating joint betweenthe several movaable parts.
The invention consists more particularly .of the arrangement, construction, and .com-
bination of parts, as hereinafter described, and more definitely pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings, showing the l preferred embodiment of my invention and inwhich like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention, showing in dotted lines the several parts in different positions to adapt Fig. 2 is 'a side view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, of one of the legs of my device,'sho-wing the screw in operative position. 7 Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 1 indicate the sectional legs or arms, the upper sections 2 of which are suitably pivoted together at the top 2. To the lower free ends of these sections 2 are pivoted sections or links 3, the freeends of which are o pivoted intermediate of the ends of reversible sections 4:. Each of these reversible sections 4 have pivoted to one of their ends 4 points 5 5, while the opposite ends 4. are formed into caliper-points, one of which is double and provided with a bifurcated end.
The link to which is pivoted the reversible section 4, having the double caliper-point, is provided with a screw 6 to be projected through the side of the link on which works said reversible section to provide a base against which the reversible section may rest when the device is being used as a caliper and to which said reversible section may be returned after being removed in releasing the caliper.
It is obvious how the different sections of my device. may be placed in different positions in order to adapt it for various purposes, such as a compass, divider, inside or outside caliper, tram, &c.
I do not wish to limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, as I am fully aware that changes may be made herein-as, for example, the screw 6 may be put on the opposite section to that on which it is shown without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be practical.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of pivotal upper sections,
links pivoted to said sections, reversible sections pivoted intermediate of their ends to said links, and points pivoted to said reversible sections. a
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of pivotal sections, links pivoted to said sections, reversible sections piv- 8o oted intermediate of their ends to said links, means to limit the movement of one of said reversible sections, and pointspiyoted to said reversible sections.
3. In adevice of the character described, the combination of pivotal upper sections, links pivoted-to said upper sections, and reversible sections pivoted intermediate of their ends to said links and having caliper-points at one end and points pivoted to their oppo- 0 site ends.
4.. In a device of the character described, the combination of pivotal upper sections, links pivoted to said upper sections, reversible "sections, one of which is provided with a 5 bifurcated end, pivoted intermediate of their ends to said links, points, pivoted to said reversible sections, and a screw in one of said links adapted to form a base for one of saidreversible sections, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY A. J. BROWN.
