CAN FOR BLACKING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,911, dated March 17, 1903. Application filed July '7, 1902. Serial No. 114,626. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD SAMP- SON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Penketh, inthe county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans for Blacking, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates to improvements in cans for blacking, black-lead, and the like,

and has for its object the provision of a can for holding blackin g, black-lead, and the like wherein the operation of mixing such blacking, for instance, with water or other suitable liquid can be more readily and conveniently effected than was heretofore possible.

In order that this my said invention may be the more readily understood and carried into practical efiect, reference is hereby made to the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings, Wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved blacking-can, and Fig. 2 is asectional elevational View thereof upon line A B of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever occurring, or designates an oval or other conveniently-shaped can or tin, which can or tin a is divided bymeans of a partition b, which partition 1) ispreferably nearer to one end of the can a than the other. By this means two compartmentsc and d are formed. The larger compartment 0 is open at the top and is utilized for containing the blacking, black-lead, or the like, and the smaller compartment, which is utilized for,

containing the water or other mixing agent, is closed at the top by the plate 6 and provided with a filling-orifice e, which may, if desirable, be closed by means of a screw-cap 6 A small hole 73' is provided in the lower part of the partition I) aforesaid, and in the same vertical lineas this hole I) a sleeve fis arranged, which sleeve f extends from the top of the can or tin or to within a short distance of the bottom. Within this sleeve f an indiarubber plug g is arranged, the said plug 9 being carried upon the lower end of a wire rod .by means of a hot wire or the like.

g, which lower end is flattened and provided with ahole to enable a securing-pin g to be inserted through the plug and the said hole.

This securing-pin g is preferably inserted after a hole has been made in the rubber plug By this means the plug is prevented from bulging.

The upperend of the wire rod g passes through a hole in the top plate 6 of the liquidcoinpartment d of'the can a and is bent into a loop'orlhandle at the extreme end.

In operation the plug g is normally in its lowest position, as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings, and when in this position the hole I) in the partition bis closed by the said plug. When, however, more liquid is required to facilitate the mixing of the blacking or the like, the said plug g is drawn up the sleevef sufficiently far to enable the liquid in the compartment d to flow through the hole 19 into the compartment 0. When sufficient liquid has passed into the compartment 0, the plug 9 is pushed down again into its normal position, closing the hole I).

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The improved blacking-can consisting in the combination with an oval can divided into two compartments by a partition, one of which compartments is open at the top and the other closed, a hole being provided in the lower part of the said partition; of a plug for closing the said hole, said plug being carried on the lower spatulated end of a wire handle and secured thereto by a securing-pin; and of a sleeve carried upon one side of the partition aforesaid, for retaining the plug in position, said sleeve terminating a short distance from the bottom of the can substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore described and illustrated.
