Description

PATENTED MAIL-10, 1903.
0-. B. FAIRWEATHER. GOV-ER PLATE FOR BOILERS.
APPLICATION I'JILBD NOV. 30, 190 1.
10 MODEL.
- 5 Z119 fr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. FAIRWEATHER, OF COATESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO J. S. WORTH AND W. P. WORTH, OF COATESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COVER-PLATE FOR BOI LERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters latent NO. 722,571, dated March 10, ,1903.
Application filed NovemberBO, 1901. SerialNo. 84,226. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. FAIR- WEATHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ooatesville, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cover- Plates for Boilers, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of myinvention is to make a man hole cover-plate for boilers, &c., of a single piece of sheet-steel or other metal struck up into form, and to which can be rigidly secured the bolts by which it is attached to the yokes. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved manhole cover-plate for boilers, &c. Fig. 2 is a front View. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 5 5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View on the line 6 6, Fig. 4.
A is the shell of the boiler, having an oblong opening surrounded by an internal flange a.
B is the cover-plate for closing the opening. This cover-plate has an annular flange b, which bears against the flange a of the boilerplate A, and mounted between the two flanges a and b is any suitable packing c.
The cover-plate B is made, preferably, of a single sheet of steel struck up to the form shown clearly in the drawings.
b is the central portion of the cover-plate having flat or plain surfaces d d, which are perforated at e e for the passage of the bolts D D. These bolts have heads 61' and are screw-threaded and provided with nuts 01 which are screwed down tightly onto the cover-plate and hold the bolts D rigidly to the plate. I provide any suitable packing a between the heads d of the bolts and the coverplate, so as to make a tight joint.
The metal of the cover-plate is shaped to form an annular hollow rib b at the front'and a recess 12 at the back between the central portion b of the cover-plate and the flange, thus not only strengthening the cover-plate considerably, but also forming a guide for the adjustment of the cover-plate to the manholeopening.
The two plain surfaces (1 d of the.coverplate are separated by a hollow curved rib f, which extends from one side to the other and stifiens the center portion of the plate.
G G are two yokes, in the present instance of the usual form, which rest upon the boilershell and through which passes the bolts D D; Nuts 01 on the bolts are for the purpose of drawing the cover-plate tightly to its seat against the flange a of the boiler-shell, making a very rigid cover-plate with a tight joint between the cover-plate and the boiler-shell.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination in a cover-plate for boilers, of the body portion having an annular flange and a center portion with an annular hollow rib between the center portion and the flange, two flat surfaces on the center portion separated by a rib, and perforations in the flat surfaces of the cover-plate, with bolts having removable means whereby they are rigidly secured to the flat portions of the cover-plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a cover-plate for boilers, a sheet-steel plate struck up from a single sheet of metal and having an annular flange, an annular hollow rib, and a center portion having perforated fiat surfaces separated by a central rib, headed bolts extending through the perforations, nuts on the bolts by which the bolts are confined to the head, and
packing between the heads of the bolts and the cover-plate, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a coverplate for boilers, made of a single sheet of metal struck up into form and having a central portion, with two substantially plane sur- CHARLES B. FAIRWEATHER.
