STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,843, dated January 24, 1882. 7
Application filed Octobe To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. MIOI'IENER, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Steam-Boilers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in the steam-boiler fcr which I have obtained Letters Patent No.193,378,and dated'July 24, 1877. In the use of the said boiler I have found that the curved continuation of the cylindrical main shell across the bottom of the main fireflue becomes straightened by its exposure to the tire passing through the flue and on account of its isolation from the interior of the boiler proper and the consequent unequal dis-' tribution ofthe steam-pressure upon the boilershell. Thisdefectl have attempted to overcome by the construction of the boiler for which I have obtained Letters Patent No. 224,836, dated February 2-1, 1880, in which the main fire-flue was constructed of an entire shell with a flat bottom portion, and the outer main shell was made segmental in cross-section and attached at its longitudinal edges to the exterior of the flue-shell. Experience, however, has proved that the said construction does not afford the desired stability to the boiler, owing to the outward strain on the main shell being thrown directlyontothe ends of the rivets which fasten said main shell to the flue-shell.
It is to remedy this defect which my present invention has for its object; and to that end it fire flue of a continuation of the main or outer shell of the boiler, and making the fire flue shell of segmental form in cross-section, and riveting its longitudinal edges to the interior of the main shell,-at or near the edges of the straightened bottom portion thereof, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an isometric projection of a longitudinal section of the boiler; and Figs.2 and 3 are transverse sections of the same, taken at the point where it is supported on the axle of the vehicle.
1' 18, 1881. (No model Similar letters of reference indicate corre- 5o sponding parts.
A denotes the main or outer shell of the boiler, which in cross-section I make in the form of a segment or an arc of a circle with a chord, 0, across its base, said latter flat or straight portion being formed of a continuation of the main shell and constituting a part" of same to the same extent as the hitherto curved bottom portion of the boiler is a part of the cylindrical main shell shown in my aforesaid prior patent, No. 193,378, thus maintaining the integrity of said shell.
B represents the shell of the main fire-flue, which is extended nearly the length of the boiler proper, and conveys the products ofcombastion from the fire-box at the front end of the boiler to the usual combustion-chamber at the rear end of the boiler. The aforesaid flueshell B is made of segmental form in cross section, andis riveted along its longitudinal 7o edges to the interior of the main or outer shell, A, of the boiler, at or near the edges of the straightened bottom portion, a, thereof, which latter serves as a bottom to said fire-flue. The integrity of the main boiler-shell with the bottom of the fire-flue forms a complete and substantial tie to the fire-flue shell and obviates undue weakening of the structure.
E represents the return-fines by which the products of combustion pass from the usual combustion-chamber at the rear end of the boiler to the smoke box and stack at the front end of the boiler.
0 denotes the axle of the vehicle upon which the boiler is mounted. Said axle having a straight central portion, (1, upon which the flat bottom a of the boiler rests.
At the base of the segmental part of the boiler I forge on the axle 0 two shoulders, e e, which abut against oppositesides of the'boiler, so as to further brace the same and prevent its spreading at the bottom. The said shoulders are formed either by cranking or bending the axle, so as to bring a portion thereof to bear against the sides of the boiler, as shown in 5 Fig. 2 of the drawings, or by an extra block forged or welded onto the top of the axle, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the form edges of the straight bottom portion thereof,
all constructed and combined substantially in 15 the manner specified and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and aifixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Oswezo, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, 20
this 11th day of October, 1881.
