To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. ETTENGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Heads for Brake- Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for adjustably securing brake-heads to brake-beams, whereby said heads may be positively locked in varying adjusted positions, the object of the improvement being to provide a brakehead holder that is permanently fixed to the beam and receives the brake-head in such manner that said head may be readily applied or removed and replaced when repairs are necessary.
Figure I is a top or plan view of a portion of a brake-beam equipped with my improvement. Fig. II is a rear elevation of my brake-head and the holder by which it is carried shown applied to the brake-beam. Fig. III is a side view of my brake-head. Fig. IV is a vertical section taken on line IV IV, Fig. II, through one of the brake-heads and showing the brake-head holder in elevation within said head. Fig. V is a side view of a brake-head constructed in accordance with my improvement and illustrating a modification, Fig. VI is a view illustrating fragments of the modified form of brake-head and brake-head holder assembled.
A designates the tension member of a brake-beam, and B the compression member, the ends of which are secured to each other and the central portions of which are held separated by a strut C, disposed as usual.
The brake-beam shown is constructed in accordance with that set forth in United States Letters Patent No. 733,839, issued July 14, 1903, to Philip T. Handiges and the Damascus Brake Beam Company; but it may be of any other desired construction.
1 designates a brake-head holder which consists of a central portion secured to an end of the brake-beam and arms provided with upper and lower bolt-holes 2 and 2', passing longitudinally therethrough. There is a similar brake-head holder mounted upon the other'end of the beam; but as the two holders are of the same form a description of one of them will be sufficient. The brakehead holder is provided with a central aperture in which the end of the brake-beam is fitted in such manner as to prevent rocking of the holder. The holder is held from longitudinal movement on the beam by any suitable means, such as rivets 3. (See Figs. II and IV.)
4 designates the brake-head, the rear side of which is recessed, so that said head may be fitted over the holder 1 with its side webs 5 embracing the 'sides of the holder. The brake-head has at its forward side an inwardly-extending swell 6, that is adapted to bear against the forward side of the holder, as seen in Fig. IV. Above and below this swell are pockets 7, into which the upper and lower forward portions of the holder 1 may enter when the brake-head is rocked on the holder for the purpose of adjustment. In the side webs of the brake-head is an upper series of bolt-holes Sand a lower series of bolt-holes 8, these bolt-holes being disposed in sets and in alinement with each other in said side walls.
9 and 9 are set-bolts, which are introduced, respectively, through an alined pair of the upper bolt-holes 8 and an alined pair of the lower bolt-holes 8 in the brake-head side webs and which pass through the bolt- holes 2 and 2 in the brake-head holder to hold said head from movement on the holder.
As seen in Figs. III and IV, the brake-head is in an intermediate position of adjustment, due to the setbolts 9 and 9 occupying the intermediate bolt-holes 8 and 8 in the side webs'of the brake-head. When it is desired to change the adjustment of the brake-head and tilt its upper end forwardly and its lower end rearwardly, the set-bolts are removed,
and the brake-head is shifted upon the holder to bring the lower bolt-holes 8 and 8 into alinement with the bolt-holes in the arms of the brake-head holder, and the set-bolts being then introduced through the alined boltholes serve to retain the brake-head in its adjusted position. Should it be desired to tilt the upper end of the brake-head rearwardly and the lower end forwardly, the set-bolts .are withdrawn and the brake-head rocked on its holder until the upper bolt-holes in the brake-head webs are brought into alinement with the bolt-holes in the arms of the headholder, and set-bolts are inserted into the alined holes to again retain the brake-head in its adjusted position.
In Figs. V and VI, I have illustrated a modification of my improvement in which in stead of using the series of bolt-holes 8 and 8 in the side webs of the brake-head I pro vide in the brake-head 4E longitudinal boltapertures 8 and 8 through which the setbolts pass. Upon the outer faces of the side webs of the brake-head are serrated bosses 10 and 10. These bosses receive washers 11, which are also serrated and which are inteposed between the serrated bosses and the facing serrated arms of the brake-head holder 1*. This construction provides for a wide range of adjustment of the brake-head upon its holder without the necessity of removing the set-bolts, it being only necessary to loosen the nuts on the bolts sufliciently to permit disengagement of the serrated washers from either the bosses on the brake-head or the serrations on the arms of the brake -head holder.
I claim as my invention- 1. In an adjustable brake of the character described, the combination of a brake-beam, a brake-head holder fixedly secured to the beam, a brake-head having a bearing on the brake-head holder permitting its angular adjustment thereon, and connections between said holder and head both above and below the said bearing, releasable and permitting the relative adjustment between the head and holder.
2. In an adjustable head-brake, the combi nation of a beam, a brake-head holder fixedly secured to the beam and a brake-head having a bearing upon said holder, permitting relative angular adjustment between the head and holder and bolted to the holder both above and below said bearing; each bolt being shiftable in one of the parts through which it passes so as to permit the adjustment of the brake-head when the bolts are released.
8. The combination with a brake-beam, of a brake-head holder rigidly secured to said beam, a brake-head fitted to said holder, and set-bolts passing through said brake-head and brake-head holder to unite them; one of said united members being provided with two sets of series of bolt-holes to receive said setbolts, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a brake-beam, of a brake-head holder rigidly secured to said beam and provided with bolt-holes, a brakehead having two sets of series of bolt-holes and fitted to said holder, and set-bolts passing through alined pairs of the bolt-holes in said brake-head and through the bolt-holes in said brake-head holder, substantially as set forth.
,5. The combination with a brake-beam, of a brake-head holder rigidly secured to said brake-beam and provided with bolt-holes, a brake-head having side webs provided with two sets of series of bolt-holes and fitting over said holder, and set-bolts passing through alined pairs of said brake-head bolt-holes and through the bolt-holes in said brake-head holder, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a brake-beam, of a brake-head holder rigidly secured to said beam and provided with bolt-holes, a brakehead recessed at its rear side and provided with two sets of series of bolt-holes, set-bolts passing through alined pairs of the bolt-holes in said brake-head and through the bolt-holes in said brake-head holder; said brake-head being provided interiorly at its forward side with a swell arranged to bear against the forward side of said brake-head holder, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with a brake-beam, of a brake-head holder rigidly secured to said beam and provided with bolt-holes, a brakehead recessed at its rear side and provided with two sets of series of bolt-holes, set-bolts passing through alined pairs of the bolt-holes in said brake-head and through the bolt-holes in said brake-head holder; said brake-head being provided interiorly at its forward side with a swell arranged to bear against the forward side of said brake-head holder and containing pockets into which the forward portion of said brake-head holder enters when the brake-shoe is adjusted, substantially as set forth.
