FULCRUM BLOCK.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 21, 1909.

. beams and more UNITED STAT E HENRY J. coxam; STEPIZIEN J. 'GALnaGHnnl, or aew'pnmws, IJOUISIDAINA.
To all-whom it my conc emf I i 2 Be it, known tliat"we, HE av J. and. citizens nf the- United States of X nerica-{residing at New STEPHEN J. GALLAGHER,
Orleans,- Louis'ianzu' have' invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fulcrum- Blocks, of'which the following is a specifieationw' This invention relates to new and useful improvements infulcrunr blocks for. brake particularly to a fulcrum block of that 'eneral type'ip which provision is made or the use of either a hand or a left-hand brake lever.- p
The primary object of the invention 15 to provide a fulcrum blockof the general type referred -to of such novel construction that tillers or linersfor cotiperatiouwith the brake lever are unnecessary. Consequently the present block involves a lessening of cost and a quicker and more convenient operation of changing the inclination of the lever.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a novel construction of sectional fulcrmn block in which special regard is bad to convenience of assemblage, strength and in expensiveness.
In the accompanying drawings we have. illustrated, by way of example, a )referred and advantageous embodiment o the invention.
In the said drawings: Figure 1 is a detail perspective view illustrating a brake beam c'tpiippcd with a brake lever and fulcrum block ctmstructcd in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical lon gitu'dinal section of the fulcrum block. and Fig. 3 is a cross sectioi'ial view-thereof showing the pivot of the. brake lever.
Similar nulneralsof reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several 'views.
concerned, may be of any approved form.-
'lhe fulcrum block is designated in a gem eral way by the numeral 3 and the brake.
lever by the numeral 4. The fulcrum block consists of upper and lower counterpart sections 5, each having at. its rear end a reccssed axially extended lug, as 7. The lugs 7 tit. over opposite sides ofthe beam and are secured thereto by a bolt and nut or right FULcRUM-BLocK: 1"-

other equivalent fastening, as 8. ,The see- Hons-,5 are fitted against one another and are suchrelation by the fastening 8 above mentioned, and by a similar fasten- I .ing,- as .9, which held in passes through the forward end portions of said sections.
Each section 5 is formed with a pair of longitudinal slots,
slots 10 and 11 in their registering relations thus afi'ord continuous intersecting openings, Jeach of which may receive the brake lever 4.
Between the slots of each section longitudinal triangular webs. as 12, occur, which are of such proportions as to;a ssure that the formation of the slots does not materially weaken the fulcrum block. Similar webs occur between the slots of the adjacent blocks and, while these webs are in sections, they through the opposed solid webs i2 and intersects the centers of the openings 10 and 11. The cotter pin 14 provides for the ready removal of the brake lever which may be fit ted in either of the continuous slotted openings 10 or ll-according to 'hetber a right hand or a left-hand inclina ion is desired.
The provision 'of the vertically disposed pivot pin in connection with theintersecting openings provides for the use of the block inditl'erently with either a right-hand or a left-hand brake lever and dispenses with the use of fillers or liners or similar intermediate parts. At the same time it provides for an easy and-quick changing operation, it being necessary simply to remove the pivot bolt. change the lever, and replace the bolt.
In view of the fact that the sections are counterparts, the block may be made at a niinimum cost and at the same time the arrangement provides for strength just as effectually as would a solid block.
Having fully described our invei'ition, we claim: v
1. A fulcrum block for.bralte beams having a pair of continuous intersecting slotted openings. in combination with a brake lever for arrangement in either of the openings. the brake levorhaving an intermediate 10 and 11, which extend, at right angles, toward one another and regcorresponding, similarly desig rated slots. in the opposing section.
