Description

UNITEDr STATES l PATENTv O'EEICE.
JOHN s. yWORTH AND ACHARLES E. EAiRWEATHER, OE oOA'rEsv'LLE, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIeNoEs TO J. s. WORTH AND w. P. WORTH, YOP OOATEsvILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOILER-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,999, dated May 13, 1902.
Application led November SO, 1901. Serial No. 84,229. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN S. WORTH and CHARLES B. FAIEWEATHEE, citizens ofv the United States, and residents of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Boiler-Braces, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in braces for strengthening boilers and other sheet iron or steel structures.`
The main object of our invention 'is to economically manufacture such a brace and provide sufficient metal at places where strength is needed, and yet make it of comparatively light material.
A further object of the invention is to separate the base of 'the brace, so as to allow an opening between the two feet for the-circulation of Water, so that there will be com para-v tively little surface of the boiler-plate covered by the brace. -v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our fimproved brace. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a View looking in the direction of the arrow 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is aview looking in the direction of the arrow 4, Fig. 2. Fig.' 5 is arviewof the blank from which the brace is made.
Referring inthe first instance to Fig. 5, A
is the'blank, cut, preferably, vfrom sheet-steel; and of the shape shown in the drawings, hav-'` ing a body portion a, a base portion d', and
a head portion a2.. Extending from each sidev of the head portion are wings a3, and extend-L ing from the base are portions b b, which;r
eventually form the feet oftheV brace. In the rst operation the blank A is bent on the center line 0cm, so as to form theinclinedportionI A of the brace, and is then bent on the lines'- y fy, so as to form the feet b.
We separate the feetb h of the brace, so as to form a V-shaped passage d between the feet. The height of this passage is indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2. When the brace is secured to the shell of the boiler, the water will freely circulate through this V-shaped passage, and thus 'protect the'shell to a certain extent, as it is found to be objectionable to cover the surface of the boilerwith a single plate, owing-to the fact that the boiler is liable to burn out at this point.
The head of the brace is iiattened out, as shown in the drawings, from-the point c, and the wings a3 are turned back upon the head portion of the brace, as indicated in Figs. l and 4, so as to give this head portion, which is perforated at e e, the strength desired.
The size of the brace may be varied and the shape slightlymodilied without departing from the main feature of our invention.
It will be seen that we can make a very substantial and stiff brace of comparatively light material, Which can be readily secured in place in the boiler and the brace strengthened where necessary, and, furthermore, a
rcomparatively small surface ofthe boilershell is covered by the feet 'of the brace, as these feet are made as small as possible and are divided by the channel, through which the Water can freely flow.
' We claim as our inventionl. As a new article of manufacture, aboilerbrace made of a single sheetof metal bent so as to form a body portionof double thickness, a head portion of double thickness connected to the body portion by a single thickness of metaland having feet of single thickness,
.substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a boilerbrace made of a single sheet of metal bent so as to form an inclined body portion of double thickness, a headportion, said head portion having wings bent upon the head portion, and having feet spread apart and forming a channel, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a boilerbrace made of a single sheetof metal having an inclined body portion of double thickness, a head portion of doublefthickness and feet extending from each side ofl the base of the inclined portion, the base of-.theninclined portion being spread apart forming a V-shaped channel between the feet, substantially as described. f'
4. A blank for a boiler-brace consisting,r of naines to this specification in the presence of a single sheet of metal having a body portion two subscribing Witnesses. a, at head portion a2, wings a3 projecting from JOHN S W-ORTH each side of the head. portion and portions 1 5 I) projecting at an angle froin the opposite CHARLES L FAIRWEATHILR end of the body portion, substantially :is defitnessesz scribed. WILL-A. BARR, In testimony whereof Wo have signed oni' J OS. H. KLEIN.
