Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MCKERI- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive- Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locomotive boilers, and has for its object improved means for constructing the boiler shell, with particular reference to the point where the fireboX sheets join the barrel sheets, which enter into the construction of the shell of the boiler.
The primary object of this invention is to provide means for constructing the neck sheet of the boiler, so that it is an integral part of the first barrel sheet of the shell.
Another object of the device is to provide a boiler of a more substantial construction than is possible with the usual method of pressing the neck sheet as a separate part of the barrel sheet, as the invention contemplates the elimination of the joint between the neck sheet and the barrel sheet, and obviously the rivets in the joint.
This invention is particularly adapted to the construction of that type of boiler known as the Belpaire boiler.
With these and many other objects in view, which will be more readily apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully pointed out illustrated and claimed.
It will be understood that the invention is quite susceptible to a wide range of structural modification without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, but a preferred and practical embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a locomotive boiler having this invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation of a locomotive boiler showing the application of this invention. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the combined neck and barrel sheets. Fig. 4 shows a partial side elevation of a boiler made in accordance with the usual method now employed in the construction of locomotive boilers, and clearly shows the neck sheet as a separate and distinct part from the barrel sheet. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the invention.

In carrying out this invention no change is contemplated in the general construction of the boiler, either in the firebox or barrel sheets, but the neck sheet designated by the numeral 10, Fig. 4, is entirely eliminated in the present invention and thus becomes an integral part of the barrel sheet, designated by the numeral 11.
In the improved construction I eliminate not only the neck sheet but the rivets, which secure the neck sheet to the barrel sheet. It will obviously be seen that this construction will not only improve the construction of the boiler, but also provide means whereby the cost of the construction can be very much reduced.
In the construction of this combined neck sheet and barrel sheet, designated by the numeral 12, I roll the barrel sheet to the required curvature and diameter, leaving sufficient metal on the end 14:, from which the neck sheet is pressed: this process being readily accomplished with but one heat of the plate and a simple die and follower.
From the foregoing it is thought that the many advantages of the herein described invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it pertains, and

In combination with a locomotive boiler fire box sheet, a single plate of metal rolled to form a barrel sheet having at one end an integral surplus portion pressed into a flange which constitutes the neck sheet secured to the fire box sheet.
