UNITED STATES PATENT PHILIS MAYOTTE, OF ESCANABA, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN S. LINDSAY, OF ESGANABA, MICHIGAN.
WlNDOW-SASH ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,526, dated March 10, 1903. Application filed July 16, 1902. Serial No. 115,804. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, PHILIS MAYOTTE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved I WVindow-Sash Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for facilitating the raising of window-sashes without the need of employing counterbalanceweights and also for automatically locking the sash in any position desired.
To this end it comprises a spring-actuated gear fastened on the window-sash and arranged to climb on a rack held by the window-frame. In combination with this gear a shaft is employed and arranged so that by axial movement of the shaft the gear may be released, or when desired the gear may be fastened to the case. or sash, thus locking the sash with respect to the window-frame.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front view showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figs. 1 and 3, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Ct indicates a case, which is adapted to be fastened rigidly to a window-sash, as shown, and which is formed with an inset portion a, receiving the rack 17, which is fastened to the window-frame alongside of the sash, so that as the sash is moved the case runs along the rack.
0 indicates a gear, which is mounted in the case and has its hub 0 connected with a coilspring cl, the outer end of which is fastened to the case, as shown; When this spring is wound, its tension will turn the gear 0, when the gear is free to move, and said gear in climbing on the rack will raise the sash. As the sash is moved downward the gear 0 is moved reversely, and this rewinds the spring.
9 indicates the pin or shank on which the gear 0 is mounted. This pin e has asquare portion e, which is adapted to fit into a corresponding cavity 0 in the gear a. The square portion 6' also engages the walls of a correspondingly-formed opening a in the case a. f indicates an expansive spring pressing between the hub c of the gear 0 and a collar 6 on the shaft e and tending to hold said shaft normally in the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the square portion e of the shaft e will lock the gear 0 with the case a and will prevent the action of the spring d. By pushing the pin or shaft 6 inward, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, the square portion e will disengage the spring d, and the spring 01 will then be free to act.
In using the device the parts are applied as shown in the drawings and so adjusted that when the sash is lowered the spring d will be wound. The spring f, acting on the pin 6, will hold it normally in active position,
and the gear 0 will then be locked within the case, and being in mesh with the rack bit will prevent the movement of the sash.
.When, however, the pin e is pressed in, manually or otherwise, the gear 0 is released and the spring (1 is allowed to unwind, thus causing the gear a to climb on the rack b and raise the sash. On releasing the pin 6 it again locks the sash raised to any position desired, the elevation of the sash being dependent upon the time that the pin 6 is released. It will be observed, therefore,"that my invention not only provides means for raising the sash and for counterbalancing the weight thereof, so as to enable the sash to be raised by the application of a slight manual pressure, but it also provides a positive lock for the sash, enabling the sash to be fastened at any elevation desired.
Various changes in the form and details of myinvention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit of my invention. Hence I consider myself entitled to all forms of the invention as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a window-sash, of a rack held relatively stationary thereto, a gear working with the rack, means tending to turn the gear, and a pin on which the gear the gear, and a rack meshed with the gear, said means for turning the gear comprising a coil-spring connected with the gear 15 and with the case and contained in the latter. 5 In testimony whereof I have signed my i name to this specification in the presence of I two subscribing witnesses.
PHILIS MAYOTTE.
