MECHANISM FOR OPERATING AWNINGS- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. OALMAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Mechanism for Operating Awnings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to means for operating the roller of an awning for the purpose of raising and lowering the awning, the object being to provide a simple construction for locking the gearing to hold the awning in any desired position.
I will describe a mechanism for operating awnings embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of an awning with an operating mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the operating mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line a: 00 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bevel-pinion arranged on the end of the awning and meshing with a bevel-pinion 2, attached to the upper end of a rod 1, the lower end of said rod being connected to a bevelgear 3, arranged within a casing 5, designed to be secured to the frame of a window or door. The gear 4 meshes with a gear 6, also arranged within the casing and having a tubular hub 7 which has a bearing in a tubular boss 8, extended from the front wall of the casing 5. The opening through the hub 7 has angular walls adapted to engage with corresponding angles formed on the horizontal port-ion of an operating-lever 9. The opening through the hub 7 and the gear-wheel 6 is enlarged and made angular, as indicated at 10. This enlarged portion is designed to receive a lockingblock 1 1, movable in a boxing 12, arranged in the casing. Between the rear wall of the boxing 12 and the rear end of the lockingblock 11. is a coiled spring 13, which serves to force said block outward into locking engagement with the bevel-gear 6.
In operation when it is desired to raise or lower the awning the horizontal portion of the crank is to be inserted and pushed inward to force the locking-block out of the opening 10. Then by turning the crank the gearing will be operated. When the awning is in its adjusted position, the crank is to be removed, so that the spring 13 may move the locking-block into the opening 10 of said gear-wheel 6.
The device is applicable either on the righthand or left-hand side of the awning. Ratchets and other devices are dispensed with, and the spring-pressed block entering the crankaperture from the inside locks the gearing in the simplest manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with an awning-roller, of a casing designed to be secured to the framing of a window or door, a boxing arranged in the casing, a'spring-pressed locking-block movable in said boxing, a bevelgear arranged in the casing and having an opening with angular walls for receiving said block, a hub on said gear-wheel having a longitudinal opening, the walls of which are angular for receiving the correspondinglyshaped portion of a crank, another gear-wheel in the casing meshing with the first-mentioned gearwheel, and a driving connection between said other gear-wheel and the awning-roller.
2. The combination with an awning-roller, of a casing adapted to be secured to the framing of a window or door, a rod having a bevelgear connection with the roller and extended downward, a easing into which the lower end of the rod projects, a bevel-gear attached to the rod within the casing, another gear meshing with the gear on the lower end of said rod, the said other gear having a tubular hub the walls of which are angular, the inner end of the tubular portion being enlarged and also made angular, a boxing secured in the casing, a rectangular locking-block movable in said boxing and adapted to engage in said enlarged portion, and a spring in the boxing for forcing said block into said enlarged opening.
