The invention is more especially adapted for use in connection with what are called normally unbalanced coiling shutters, that is the species in which the flexibleA shutter is normally held coiled up and is liberated au'-v tomatically by a dangerous rise of temperature forl uncoiling mainly by gravity in the event of iire. t will be understood by those skilled in the art that-6 represents one of a pair of end brackets to support such a shutter and that 5 is the end of a roller shaft supported between such a pair ofbrackets. 7 represents a wall to the outer side of which the brackets are secured. The shaft 7 has secured to it a spur or ratchet wheel 8. Fulcrumed on apin 9 projecting from the side of the bracket is a lever 10 which extends under the wheel. Pivoted on the lever nea-r its middle is a pawl 11 havingits lower end weighted so as to cause its tooth-end to normally point toward the wheel 8. lt will be observed that this invention makes it especially convenient to test the shutter fromtime to time as this can be done from the interior of the building and Without the necessity of employing ladders to reach high places. Y
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention.
What I claim is:
A locking and releasing means for a ire shutter roller provided with a ratchet, comprising in combination, a'lever pivoted near the ratchet, a gravity pawl pivoted on said lever to normally engage said ratchet to permit rotation of the ratchet in one direction and prevent rotation in the other direction, a second lever pivoted to swing under the irst mentioned lever, the end of said first mentioned lever adapted to normally rest at its end upon the second mentioned lever near the pivot oi' the latter, a device connected with the second mentioned lever to actuate the same to raise and lower the first mentioned lever to engage and disengage the pawl from the ratchet, and means whereby said second mentioned lever may be held in raised position to hold the pa'wl normally engaged with the ratchet, substantially as t described.
