UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. AMES, OF OHILLICOTHE, OI-IIO.
BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,477, dated March 10, 1903.
Application filed December 9,1902. Serial No.134,535. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. AMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bottles, and has for its object to construct a device of this character from which the stopper cannot be withdrawn to refill the bottle.
The simple and novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the neck of my bottle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the plug. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal section of a modified form of my device.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the diiferent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates the body of my bottle, which bears a neck 2 of novel construction comprising two frusto-conical portions 3 and 4, the small end of the upper portion 3 being connected to the large end ofxthe lower one 4. The internal bore 5 of the neck 2 corresponds with the outer contour thereof, forming aflaring mouth 6. Shoulders 7 are formed at the junction of the upper and lower portions 3 and 4. A plug 8 is fitted in the neck and consists of a body 9 and a flexible uniform jacket 10 of cork or other yielding substance. The body 9 has a conical head 9 and is traversed longitudinally by a bore consisting of a small uniform portion 11 and a conical portion 12. A ledge 13, formed on the body 9, serves to hold the jacket in place.
In assembling my bottle the jacket 10 is placed on the body 9 of the plug, which is then forced down into the neck until the jacket is below the shoulder 7, when it expands and holds the plug against withdrawal. The form of the bore in the plug prevents the introduction of an instrument to withdraw the plug.
In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 4 a neck 14 is employed having a flaring mouth and a swell 15 to accommodate a plug 16, consisting of a rigid body 17, bearing a ledge 18 and having a yielding jacket 19 thereon. The body 17 has a conical head 17 and is traversed by a bore 19.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bottle, the combination of a body bearing a neck bored longitudinally, said bore being formed with an enlarged portion intermediate two contracted portions, and a perforated plug provided with an elastic jacket and fitting the said enlarged portion of said "bore, substantially as described.
2. In a bottle, the combination of a body bearing a neck traversed longitudinally by a bore formed with an enlarged portion intermediate two contracted portions, a ledge being formed at the junction of said enlarged and contracted portions, and a perforated plug having an elastic jacket thereon mounted in said enlarged portion, substantially as described.
3. In a bottle, the combination of a body bearing a neck traversed longitudinally by a bore formed with an enlarged portion intermediate two contraoted portions, a plug mounted in said enlarged portion and having a bore therein comprising a lower conical portion and an upper uniform portion, there being a gradually-receding ledge formed at the junction of said portions, said plug having a conical point, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JOSEPH A. 'AMEs.
