Definitions
- the chair is constructed in three parts or sections A B C.
- the upper section A A containing or constituting the seat, arms and back of the chair is connected at the back angle of the seat .with the middle section B B by two hinges D D, While the front of the seat is elevated and depressed by rack and gear, and fixed at any point by the slide catch E and wheel F as seen in the drawings.
- the middle section B B is attached in front to the front of the lower section C C by hinges, and at the back part is elevated by rack and gear, and held in the desired position by a rag-wheel and dog G. It will be seen that elevating the middle section carries up With it the entire upper section and also gives it an inclination forward. By means of these two movements the seated person may be raised to any convenient height and placed at any angle of inclination desired.
- H H represents a toot-rest attached to the base of the upper section and moving with it. I use the rack and gear at the four corners.

Description
F. SEARLE. DENTAL AND SURGICAL CHAIR.
" No. 7,224. Patented Mar. 26, 1 850.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLAVIUS SEARLE, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
DENTAL AND SURGICAL CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,224, dated March 26, 1850.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FLAvIUs SEARLE, 0t Springfield, in the county of I-Iampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Chair; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the construction and Operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings as forming part of this specification.
The chair is constructed in three parts or sections A B C. The upper section A A containing or constituting the seat, arms and back of the chair is connected at the back angle of the seat .with the middle section B B by two hinges D D, While the front of the seat is elevated and depressed by rack and gear, and fixed at any point by the slide catch E and wheel F as seen in the drawings. The middle section B B is attached in front to the front of the lower section C C by hinges, and at the back part is elevated by rack and gear, and held in the desired position by a rag-wheel and dog G. It will be seen that elevating the middle section carries up With it the entire upper section and also gives it an inclination forward. By means of these two movements the seated person may be raised to any convenient height and placed at any angle of inclination desired. H H represents a toot-rest attached to the base of the upper section and moving with it. I use the rack and gear at the four corners.
"What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentis The application to chairs of the middle section B B substantially as herein described-whether operated by rack and gear,
or by lever, or Windlass, or screw, at two corners of the chair or at four or at any intermediate point, provided the same results are obtained by substantially the means herein set forth.
