UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST MARX, OF NEW YORK, N. ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, HERRMANN DITTRIOH, AND JULIUS KEER, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVED SWINGING CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EENsr MARX, of the city, county, and State ot' New York. have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Swing i had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which,-
Figure l represents a sectional side elevation of this invention, the line x w, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is aplan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of chairs connected to swinging arms which are attached to the legs of a table or pianoforte', or to the under surface of the top ot' a table, counter, desk, or to any other piece of furniture or article, in such a manner that said chairs can be readily turned out from under the table, counter, desk, piano-forte, or other article, and adjusted in the desired position; and when not used they are easily turned out oi' the way under the table or other article.
For the sake of greater convenience in adjusting the chairs the swinging arms are jointed, and said arms are so adjusted that the legs `of the chairs do not touch the iioor until a person sits down on said chairs, so that in moving the chairs in or out injury to the carpet is prevented.
A represents a table, piano-forte, or other article to which a chair may be attached,v and which is supported by legs B. The chairs O are secured to the ends of arms D, which are pi voted either to the lower surface of the tabletop or to one ot' the legs, so th at they can swing freely in a horizontal pla-ne.
The arms D are or may be made in two parts, as shown, for the purpose of facilitating their motion and increasing their adjustabi1- ity, and the chairs are supported each by one leg, E, which may be steadied by braces a, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
rlhe seats of the chairs are or may be adjustable by means of screws b, in the manner of ordinary piano-forte chairs, or they may be rigidly connected to the legs E; and, it' desired, said seats may also be provided with backs F, which are made to fold down when the chair is to be swung under the table or other article.
When the chairs are not used their legs are slightly elevated from the loor, so that the same, in being moved in and out, do not injure the carpet. f
By means of the jointed swinging arms D the chairs can be readily adjusted in any desired position to suit the convenience of the person or persons intending to use the same; and when not used said chairs are readily turned out of the way, and a very convenient piece of furniture is obtained, which is applicable to ordinary tables, desks, counters, piano-fortes, or any other article where a chair is to be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The leg E, and jointed and curved arm D, supporting the seat, and operating substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me.
EENs'r MARX.
