Description

f UNITED". STATES? MARous P.' NORTON, .OR TROY, Naw YORK.
. IMPROVEDfoFF|oE--oEsi fANofcHAi-alcoMBlNED.
Specification forming'part of Letters-Patent B10425016", 'datedfMarch 22, 1864.
ToaIZ-whom it mayv concern:v
Be it kno-wn that I, MARCUS P. NORTON, of
ner and by the means hereinafter more fully described and set forth. Fig. 2 is a plan showing the track-frame and chair-track thereon; also the connections of such frame to and with the desk, and more fully hereinafter described and set forth. Fig. 3 is a cross-section showin g the pulleyr and pulley-frame, the chairtrack, the track, and that part of the trackframe which said track is fastened, and each more fully described hereinafter.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a track, track-frame hinged to an ofticedesk, so that an Office-chair may be used upon such track in front of such officedesk in the manner and-for the purposes hereinafter more fully described an set forth.
Having thus described the nature of my said invention and improvements, I will here proceed to describe the construction and operat-ion ofthe same, which is as follows, to wit:
tal of sufficient length to answer the desired.
purposes. I construct this track with a channel or groove, D', Fig. 4, for the purpose of receiving the pulley E, Fig. 3, which channel may be of any width or depth desirable. At each end of said channel there is a stop, H,
same are kept upon said track, with stops at each end thereof, asaforesa-id. Insuch cases the` invention or principle would bethe same.. F, Fig. 3, is the frame for the pulley E to yre-r:
v olve in, and through thecenterfof whichpulley passes a pin o'r center-bearing, K, Fig. 5, which pin K is made of steel and of sufficient size in diameter to answer the purposes required of it, as well as to prevent the too rapid wearing out of the same or pulley thereon. The stem L, Fig. 3, extends up into the legs of the chair B, Fig. l, and is there firmly held by means of any screw thereon, which screw into the wood.
rIhe chair B has four legs, at the lower end of each of which, there is a pulley and pulley frame, and which have been hereinbefore described. 'Ihe said pulleys operate upon the said track within the said channel D. These legs converge and unite together at their upper ends, at which there is an ordinary nut and screw for the revolving seat of said chair.
The said track-frame being hinged to the said desk at G and G, Fig. 2, it may be raised up from the iioor on which vthe same rests, for the purpose of cleaning around or about the same, or for any other purpose desired, only in such cases requiring the removal of the said chair from the said track, which .can be done at pleasure. By means of such arrangement and combination of devices an oflice-chair will always be in readiness for use, and will always be in the proper position as relates to the officedesk for use in writing, &c. The person occupyin g such office desk and chair device will, when in the chair, move himself in the same to and fro, as the case requires. W'henl such person desires to remove from his said officedesk, he will move said chair back from said desk on said track far enough for that purpose, and when such person desires to approach said desk by means of such chair and arrangement of devices as aforesaid it will be done by moving such chair on said track while Fig. 4, which is forthe purpose Vof'kceping thel- :said pulleys in the said channel and upon thc Thisv track is upon `each side ot' if the-said track-frame, secu-rel y fastened thereto.- bymeans of screws, as seen at I, Fig. 3. The@` said track ymay be made round or in otherforni upon the upper surface thereof, .in whichevent M the pulleys E would be made of-corresponding uw shape upon their peripheries, whereby the?- seated in the same, the operation being easy in either case. By this combination of devices the carpet or other floor-covering in front of said desk will not Wear out as rapidly as formerly has been the case. There is, therefore, great convenience and economy :in the use of this invention constructed, arranged, and combined as aforesaid. Any person who desires to sit sidewise to such office-desk can easily do so with this device. The chair can be turned to such position, or the said trackframe can be made upon any desired angle as relates to the front of such desk, and in that position hinged to such desk for such purpose. By the use of such track-frame the said track will be firmly secured in its proper position in front of such desk without injury to the oor or covering thereon when the same is used. The track could, however, be fastened to such floor by means of screws or otherwise, but such would injure the carget or other floor-covering. The principle would be the same in either case. The track-frame hinged to the said desk, as aforesaid, is preferable, more convenient, and always ready for use when such desk is placed in the desired position for ofce use, etc.
Any kind of hinge may be used in connecting the said track and frame to said desk which will answer the required purpose. The said chair B is easily adjusted in front of the saidy office-desk A upon the said track G whenever it is desirable to use said chair and desk thus combined. There is more comfort and ease in the use of said invention or chair and desk arranged and combined as aforesaid, or substantially the same.
Having thus described my invention or improvements in oiice desks and chairs combined in the manner aforesaid, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is-
1. The employment of the track-frame C, hinged to the desk A, in the manner substantial] y as and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
2. The combination of an office-chair with an office-desk by means of the track D D, or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have, on this 27th day of February, 1864, hereunto set my hand.
MARCUS P. NORTON.
