PATENT I OFFICE.
VESTAL W. WOODWARD, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
COMBINED DESK AND CHAlR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,397, dated September 12, 1882.
' Application filed November 18, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VESTAL W. WOODWARD, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Combined Desk and Chair, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
The" object of my invention is toprovide a new and improved chair which can be converted into a desk very conveniently.
The invention consists in a chair constructed with a revolving seat, having arm-rests, and with a movable back containing pigeon-holes, and provided with a pivoted leaf covering the pigeon-holes, which back is also provided with racks fitting in grooves in the side braces of the chair, and engaging with cog-wheels on a transverse shaft provided with a crank. If the chair is to be converted into a desk, the back is moved from the chair by turning the crank and the pivoted leaf is lowered to rest on the armrests.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin both the figures.
. zontal plane.
Figure l is aperspective view of my improved combined desk and chair, showing it extended. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of thesame shown folded for use as a chair only.
The chair A is constructed-with four legs, B, supporting the top 0, above which there is a seat, I), provided with arm-rests E, and with a downwardly projecting central pintle or shaft, F, extending through the top (J and to the cross-bar G, in which it has a bearing, thus permitting the seat D to be turned in the hori- The back H of the chair is formed of two high legsor standards, I, united by transverse bars J. A rack, K, is attached to each leg'or standard I in such a manner as to project toward the chair proper, which racks pass through the rear legs, B, and lit in grooves L in the side braces, M, uniting the front and rear legs, B. A shaft, N, provided with a crankhandle, 0, is journaled in bearings P on the bars or braces M, and on this shaft cog-wheels Q are mounted, engaging with the racks K.
rests his back against it, and the inner surface is covered with cloth, oil-cloth, or leather, as it forms the writing-desk. The leaf T must be wider than the distance between the two arm rests E, so that the outer end ofthis leaf, when lowered, can rest on these arm-rests.
The operation is as follows: Ordinarily the chair is in the position shown in Fig. 2-that is, the racks K are entirely in the grooves L,- and the leaf T is raised to cover the pigeonholes S, and forms a support l'orthe back of the person occupying sea-t D. If the chair is to be converted into a desk, the crank O is turned, whereby theracks K will be moved out of the grooves L-that is, the back H will be moved from the chair A. The occupant then turns around with the seat D, so that he faces the back H, the seat D turning with its pivot F. It is evident that the occupant must raise his feet over the racks K if he wishes to face the back H. Then the leaf T is lowered to rest on the arm-rests E, as shown in Fig. l, and can then be used asa writing-desk.
Having thus described my inven tion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
l. The combination, with the chair A, provided with the grooved braces M, of the movable back H, the racks K, the shaft N, the cog-wheels Q. and the crank O, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the chair A, of the revolving seat D, provided with arm-rests E, and resting on a pivot, F, of the movable back H, provided with a pivoted leaf, '1, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
VES'IAL WARREN WOODWARD.
