Unitarian STATES PATENT' OFFICE.
OTTO KEMPER, OF BLOOMSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO J. EDWARD BOONE, OF ALMEDIA,
PENNSYLVANIA.
GARNI ENT-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,308, dated March 10, 1903.
Application tiled June 11,1902. Serial No. ll1,1t39,.l (No model.)
To all 1071.071?, ritcty concern/.-
Be it known that I, OTTO KEMPER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at 316 West Fourth street, Bloomsburg, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Olasps, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment-clasps, and has for its object the production of a device of this character especially adapted to be secured to suspender-ends,\vhereby a garment may be suspended, thereby obviating the necessity of buttons on the garment and loops on the suspender-ends.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means whereby the clasp may secure a rm grip upon the garment, obviating any liability of the clasp becoming casually detached therefrom.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Y Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing it as applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
1 and 2 designate clamping-plates curved in a transverse direction, as shown by Fig. 3, the upper ends of which are bent to form hinge-leaves 3, through which passes a bail 4, one of its members forming a pintle 5.
The clamping-plate 1 comprises an elongated body portion 6, having notches 7 running transversely thereof. The said body portion gradually widens, forminga head 8, provided with a struck-up portion .9,serving as a socket.
The arm 2 is elongated and has its lower end bent at a right angle, forming a lip 10 to tit within the socket 9.
11 designates a sliding bail embracing the arms 1 and 2, and has its arms provided near their ends with perforations 12, in which are journaled the laterally-projecting lugs 13 of the cam-lever 14. The said lever is formed of a single piece of metal, one end of which is bent ata right angle, forming a cam 15 to engage one of the notches in the plate 1, and its edge is cut out to conform to the contour of the arm 1. The said cam is provided with the lugs 13 above referred to, which are journaled in the'pertoration 12 of the bail 11, and the opposite end of said Ylever is bent upon itself to form a finger-grasp 16.
rThe utility and operation of the device may be explained as follows: The clasp may be attached to any suitable supporting -strap through the medium ot the bail 4, and the clamping-plates placed over the edge of the garment to be supported and secured thereto by the jaws being brought together, forcing the lip 10 and a portion of the garment into the socket S) by sliding the bail 11 down the arms to the limit of its movement and throwing the cam 15 into engagement with one of the notches in the arm 1.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying, drawings it will be readily seen that I .provide a clasp which may be easily attached to a suspending member and held against casual displacement upon a garment, thereby obviating the necessity of buttons upon the garment.
Having described my invention, what I claim is" 1. The combination with a bail, of clamping-plates hinged thereto, one of said plates provided with an enlarged head having a socket, and the other provided with a lip to iit within said socket, and a sliding bail carrying a cam-lever to clamp said plates.
2. The combination with a bail,of elongated clamping-plates hinged thereto, one of said plates comprising an elongated body terminating in an enlarged head provided with a socket, and the other having its lowerend bent to form a lip to iit within said socket, and a sliding bail carrying a cam-lever to close said plates.
3. In a clasp, the combination with a bail, of clamping-plates hinged thereto, one of said plates comprising an elongated body having notches runningtransversely thereof and terminaingin an enlarged head havingastruok- In testimony whereof I afix my signature up portion serving as a socket, and the other in presence of two Witnesses. bein(r elongated and havinv its lower end bentbto form a lip to fit Within said socket, a OTTO KEMPER 5 sliding bail embraoingsaid plates, and a eam- Witnesses:
