UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ISADOR BEAVER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED SUSPENDERS AND BELT.
TQPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,415, dated February 24, 1903.
Application filed December 10, 1902. Serial No- 134,673. (No modeltl To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISADOR BEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residiug in New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Suspenders and Belts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in suspenders of that class which are so constructed as to be readily changed for use either as suspenders or as a waist-belt; and for this purpose the invention consists of a combined suspender and belt, and more spe- In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is' a front elevation ofa pair of suspenders embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a perspective view showing the suspenders converted so as tobe used for belts. Fig. 3 is a detail view embodying my invention; and Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 3, taken on line 4 4'. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A Arepresent the usual elastic suspender-straps, the rear ends of which are applied to aring a by overlapping leather loops K, fastended by sewing, riveting, or other means to the straps A, so as to reinforce the ends of the same. The ring a is made sufficiently strong to withstand the attendant strain of the straps and is fitted loosely in the end of the loops. -To this ring a is attached a band a, which is provided with the well-known snap-fastener e for bolding the suspender-end f for the rear ends of the straps A. The front ends of the straps A are fastened to links I), to one of which is attached the band "m, also provided with a snap-fastener (I, so as to hold one of the front Suspender-ends f, by which the straps are buttoned to the trousers. To the link I) of the second strap A is connected by a swiveljoint 9 another link 72, to which is applied a similar band n, which is also provided with a snap-fastener for a second front suspenderendf In order to use the suspenders as a belt, the ends ff as wellas the band 6 with the rear suspender-end f, are removed, the straps A moved around to diametrically opposite points of the ringaand at the same time somewhat shortened, band n, with its snapfastener d, turned by'means of the swiveljoint rear end forward, so as toconveniently clasp the two fasteners together, and so easily convert the suspenders into a belt. The fact that each part of one fastener tightly fits the corresponding partof the other fastener provides means for assuring a double fastening action, and thus securely hold the belt in place. It is the use of the swivel-joint which permits this easy converting, without which it could not be done as easily. This is clearly shown in Fig. 2, which shows the structure as it is to be used as a belt, and shows the bands with the snap-fasteners in position to be clasped together. To again'use the structu re as suspenders, the band 12 is again turned rear end backward and the suspender-ends applied, as clearly shown in Fig; 1.
The application of asimple ring and swiveljoint, taken together with suitable straps provided with snap-fasteners,provides a simple, cheap, and efficient device which permits a convenient converting of the suspenders to a belt, or vice versa.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as'newfand desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A pair of suspenders, comprising two plied respectively to the link'of one strap.
and the swivel-link of the other strap,"substantially as set forth.
2. A pair of suspenders, comprising two suspender-straps, a ring connecting the rear ends of said straps, links at the front ends of said straps, one of said links being provided with a second link connected by a swivel-joint thereto, and bands provided With snap-fasteners applied respectively to the front link of one strap and the swivel-link of the other strap, the snap-fasteners of both straps interlocking With each other when the swivel-link of one strap is turned so that its band faces the other band so that the suspender can be Worn as a belt, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined suspender and belt, the combination of the suspender-straps having links at their front ends, one of said links being connected with a second link by a swivel-joint, and bands provided with snapfasteners applied respectively to said link and swiveled link, said bands being adapted to receive either the suspender-ends or be locked together according as the structure is to be used as a pair of suspenders or as a belt, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ISIDOR BEAVER.
