UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
WVILLIAM EMERY DAVIDSON, OF NORTH SHIELDS, ENGLAND.
CIGAR OR CIGARETTE HO LDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 720,232, dated February 10, 1903.
Application filed November '7, 1902. Serial No. 130,372. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM EMERY DA- VIDSON, of 89 Bedford street, North Shields, in the county of Northumberland, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Tubes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sinokingtubes for holding tobacco, cigars, or cigarettes, and has for its object to provide means whereby the fag end or burned remnant of the tobacco or the cigar or cigarette is easily ejected, the said means being concealed within the holder, and so in no way detracting from its appearance.
A holder made in accordance with the invention is formed in two parts, one part telescoping more or less upon the other. Within the holder is disposed a piston or head adapted to be retracted against the influence of a spring and held until it is desired to release the same, the act of releasing the piston causing it to shoot forward and eject the cigar or cigarette end.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of one form of holder made in accordance with the invention, showing the pistonin its extended position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in an intermediate position. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing the piston in its retracted position, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 2 at the right of the catch.
Referring to the said drawings, the holder is made in two partsa forward part a, formed to receive the cigar or cigarette, and a part b, shaped to suit the mouth. The part a, intended to receive the cigar or cigarette, is formed with a hollow extension 0, adapted to telescope into the other part, said extension having a transverse slot 6 at its end f. The part b has a cylindrical recess 8 and a smokebore 25.
Disposed within the holder is a piston or head secured to a stem or -rod h. The stem or rod is formed with a slot is at one end and is provided with a shoulder, notch, or projection m, adapted to form a catch to coact with the slotted end f of the hollow extension, so as to hold the piston back when the parts are drawn apart and turned in relation to one another. A spiral springn is disposed on the rod or stem 71, between the piston-head g and the slotted endfof the hollow extension and normally-serves to force the pistonhead g into the part a, intended to receive A pin 0 is disposed in the cigar-or cigarette. the part b, shaped to suit the mouth, and passes through the slot 7c in the stem 71 and keeps the parts together. The piston-head is or may be perforated, as at p, and an additional ferrule is or may be provided between the two parts and fixed to one part and telescoping over the other. The arrangement is such that when the two members a and Z) are drawn apart the head or piston g is retraoted and the spring n compressed. When that portion of the stem it having the slot is and notch m has passed through the slot 6 in the end of the extension 0, a partial turn of the two parts a and b in relation to one another causes the notch m to coact with the end f of the extension, and thereby retains the piston g in the drawn-back position,-as shown in Fig. 2. The two parts a and b can then be closed or brought together, as shown in Fig. 3. If the members a and b are now turned so as to disengage the notch m from the end f of the extension 0, the head or piston g is forced forward by the spring 9t, and the cigar or cigarette is ejected.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a smoking-tube of a mouthpiece, a forward part adapted to he slid and turned in the mouthpiece, a spring-pressed stem with piston-head and slotted end disposed in the forward part, and connected to the mouthpieeaand means for retracting said stem and locking and releasing the same in and from the retracted position.
2. An improved smoking-tube comprising a mouthpiece having a cylindrical recess and a smoke-bore, a forward part adapted to receive a cigar or cigarette and formed with a hollow extension having a slotted end, said extension being disposed in the cylindrical recess and adapted to be turned and slid therein, a stem having a piston-head at one end and a slotted part at the other end, and a shoulder, said stem and piston being disposed in the forward part of the holder and so arranged that the slotted too end of the stem passes through the slot in the end of the hollow extension; a spiral spring disposed in the hollow extension of the forward part and between the piston-head and the slotted end of the hollow extension, and a pin disposed in the mouthpiece and passing through the slotted end of the stem; the shoulder on the stern being disposed in the hollow extension when the spring is in its extended position and disposed outside the hollow extension in the smoke-bore when the springis in its retracted position said shoulder being locked by the slotted end in the retracted position and released therefrom when the stem is turned in relation to the slotted end.
3. In smoking-tubes the combination of a mouthpiece having a smoke-bore, a forward part fitted telescopically to the mouthpiece, a spring-pressed piston-head in the forward part, a. stem projecting from the piston-head into the mouthpiece, a pin-and-slot connection between said stem and the mouthpiece, means for locking the piston in its retracted position to the forward part by turning the telescopic parts one in regard to the other and for releasing the locked parts by turning the telescopic parts when in closed or extended position.
4. In smoking-tubes the combination of a mouthpiece having a smoke-bore, a forward part fitted telescopically to the mouthpiece, a spring-pressed piston-head in the forward part, a stem projecting from the piston-head into the mouthpiece,a pin-and-slot connection between said stem and the mouthpiece, a shoulder on the stem, means for engaging said shoulder when the telescopic parts are extended and turned one in regard to the other and so locking the piston in its retracted position but allowing the telescopic parts to be closed together, the turning of the telescopic parts serving to release the shoulder and spring-pressed piston, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM EMERY DAVIDSON.
