' 3 claims. (el. 131-101' My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a cigarette holder, and has for its object the provision of a cigarette holder which may be so operated at times as to entirely conf ceal the cigarette and extinguish it.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a cigarette holder of this class which 'will be simple in structure, economical of manuffacture, and highly efficient in use. f Another object of the invention is the provision of a cigarette holder having 'a holding portion on which is slidably mounted an enveloping portion. Another object of the invention is the pro vision in a cigarette holder of an enveloping portion provided with a, swingable closure so arranged and constructed as to automatically move into closed position or open position when theA movable parts are moved.
Other obj-ects Will appear hereinafter. The invention consists inthe combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which,`
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the invention. Fig. 2 is .a centralverticall sectional View of a part of the invention showing the enveloping part in enveloping position. l
' Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the invention showing the enveloping portion in inoperative position. f Fig. 4*, is a sectional view of Fig. 3.
-The invention comprises a holding portion 7 through which extends the bore 8. On one end of the holding piece 'T' is the mouth piece 9 and formed in the opposite end of the holding 40 piece 7 is a socket 10 in which is pressed a taken on une 4-4 cup-'shaped metallic lining l1 having the' open` ing l2 formed in its base so that whenrthe cigarette 1311s pressedinto the member 11 the smoke may be drawn through the passage-way Formed in 'the periphery of the holding piece '7 and extending from vthe mouth piece 9 and terminating'at the forward end of the holding piece? at the shoulder 14 is a groove 15.
a cylindricalenveloping member 16 provided at one end with the metallic reinforcing band 17. The forward-end of the enveloping member` 16 is provided with the enlarged portion 18.0n which ishingedly mounted the closure `19. Swingably .Slidably mounted on the V holding piece '7 isi connected, at oneof vits ends, to the inner sur? face ofthe closure 19 intermediate its ends-is -aleaf spring 20 which extends `substantially `.'Jected beyond the end thereof, the closure 19 being moved to open position. The closure is 7 0 moved to open and closed position through the operation of the'holder 7 on the leaf spring 20. As the holding member 7 -is retracted from the enveloping'member 16, that is, moved Afrom the position shown in Fig. 3 tothe position shown 75 in' Fig. 1, theangularly turned end 2l ofthe leaf spring will slide in the groove l5 until the shoulder 14 is met,.whereupon the closure 19 will be swung to closed position upon further 1 l retracting of the member 7. When the parts are moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3, th'e slidable movement of the holder 7 inwardly of the enveloping member 16 will force the'leaf spring 20 to be bent downwardly and during the 85 movement of the member? inwardly of the exij veloping member 16, a bodily sliding of the leaf spring. 20 outwardly slightly will be effected.
. With a cigarette holder constructed in this manner, a person while smoking a cigarette, upon entering a room or apartment, street car, publice vehicle or the like, where smoking is prohibited or conventionally incorrect, the parts may be moved to the relative position showr in Fig.- 2 and the holder in this position inserted in 95 the pocket with safety and no annoyance, asA the y cigarette will quickly be extinguished; This obviates the necessity of the smoker discarding the v vcigarette or cigar and also avoids .the annoyance ferred form of construction of'my invention, I 105 do not wish to limit myself4 tothe precise de- :tails of structure shown, but desire to lavail myself of such variations and modifications as may come within the scope of thev appended elaimsi c Having thus described' my invention, what I ll0 ent is:
1. A cigarette holder ofthe classv described, comprising; an elongated holding member having a socket formed in one end for reception o1' a cigarette; an enveloping member slidably mounted on said holding member; a closure for the outer end of said enveloping member; and
means for moving said closure to open and closed positions upon relative movement of said enveloping member and said holding member to predetermined positions, said holding member fmA . 1,941,531 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patpletely enveloping a cigarette held by said holding member; a swingable closure on the outer end of said enveloping member; and a spring for moving said closure to open and closed position .upon movement of said holding member to predetermined positions relatively to said enveloping member.
3. A cigarette holder of the class described, comprising: a holding member adapted for reception of a cigarette; a tubular enveloping member slidably mounted on said holding member and adapted upon` movement to a predetermined position thereon for.- entirely enveloping a cigarette mountedin said holding member; a closure swingably mounted on the outer end of said enveloping member, said holding member having a longitudinally extending peripheral groove intermediate its ends; a leaf spring swingably connected atfone end to the inner surface of said closure intermediate its ends,'the opposite end of said leaf spring being angularly turned .and engagingA in said groove.
