Be it known that I, GARDNER LADD PLUM- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will onable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is toprovide an improved knife-sharpening device which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which a carving-knife or other knife may be quickly and easily sharpened by almost any one without a prior knowledge of the use of devices of this class, a further object being to provide a knife-sharpening device which comprises an oblong block composed of wood or other suitable material and provided at one end with a handle and a sheet of emery-paper adapted to be folded around said block and convenient and easily manipulated spring-holders for securing the sheet of emery-paper on said block; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in aknife-sharpening device constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of one form of my improved fastening device involving two spring-holders for securing a sheet of emerypaper to the block or body portion of the device, one of said spring devices being open; Fig. 2, a similar view showing both of the spring holding devices closed; Fig. 3, an end view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a perspective view showing another form of construction which I may employ; Fig. 5, an end view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 4. In the practice of my invention, reference being made to Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, I provide an oblong block a, of wood or other suitable material, which is preferably about seven inches long, two inches wide, and about threequarters of an inch or an inch in thickness,

and said block is provided at one end with a handle a and in one side thereof with two longitudinal grooves m The block a is also provided at one end thereof adjacent to the handle a with projecting portions or, two of which are shown at the edges of said block, but only one of which is necessary, and said block is provided at the opposite end with two longitudinal bores 06*, one of which is shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and in full lines in Fig. 2, and these bores are arranged adjacent to the edge of the block opposite the grooves (1 and said end of the block is also preferably provided with two grooves a, which correspond with and register with the grooves a and one of which is shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. l. I also provide two spring holding devices I), each of which comprises a shank 12 one of which is driven into each of the bores a and an angular portion 19 at right angles to the shank b and a long body portion 1), substantially of the same length as the block a, said body portion being provided at its free end with a downwardly-curved and backwardlybent ring or head portion 1), and the angular 1 portion 17 of each of the holding devices I) at the end thereof adjacent to the body portion 12 of the holding device is curved to form a loop 17 I also provide a sheet 0, of emery-paper, which is wrapped around the block a and one end of which is held by one of the holding devices I), as shown at c in Fig. 3, in one of the grooves a and said sheet after being wrapped around the block a is pulled tightly across the other groove a and the other holding device I) is sprung downwardly into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to hold the edge of the sheet in the other groove a and said edge of the sheet is torn off at 0 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The device is then ready for use, and a knife may be sharpened by rubbing the same on either side thereof in the manner of an ordinary Whetstone or similar device.

The grooves a in the block a extend downwardly around the projecting portion'a at one side of said block, and the loop-shaped or ring-shaped head portion 72 of each of the holders 1) is such that when said holders are forced downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2 the loop-shaped or ring-shaped por- ICO tions b engage under the projecting portion and said holding devices are thus securely held in place, and in order to release the emery-sheet c all that is necessary is to pull outwardly on the loop-shaped or ring-shaped head portions 19 of the holders 1) and they will spring outwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, and may be turned laterally on the shank portions 17 and the shank portions I) may be driven tightly into the bores a or may be made to fit loosely therein, and in practice the emery-sheet c is preferably made slightly narrower than the length of the block a.

In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown another form ofconstruction in which only one of the holders l) is employed, and in this form of construction the block a is provided with but one groove a and but one of the spring-holders b, and with this exception the construction and operation is the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the only difference being that when only one of said holding devices is employed one edge of the emery-sheet must be held by hand while the other edge is pulled across said groove and the spring holding deviceb pressed down into position, as shown in Fig. 4, after which the edge of the emerysheet is torn off at 0 exactly as with the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3.

This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Aknife-sharpeningdevice cornprisingan oblong block provided at one end with a handle and a sheet of emery-paper adapted to be folded around said block, said block being also provided at one edge with a longitudinal groove and a spring holding device having a shank adapted to be inserted into a bore in the end of the block opposite the handle and a body portion adapted to fit in said groove, said body portion being provided at its free end with a loop or ring shaped head portion adapted to engage the projection formed on said block, substantially as shown and described.

2. Aknife-shar'pening device comprising an oblong block having a handle at one end and a longitudinal bore in the opposite end, said block being also provided in one edge with a longitudinal groove, and at the end thereof adjacent the handle with a projection in which said groove is also formed, and a spring holding device comprising a shank adapted to enter said bore and a body portion ranging parallel therewith and adapted to enter said groove, said body portion being provided at its free end with a head portion adapted to engage the projection on the block, substantially as shown and described.

3. Aknife-sharpening device comprising an oblong block provided at one end with ahandle and at the opposite end with longitudinal bores, and in one edge thereof With longitudinal grooves, said block being also provided at said edge and adjacent to the handle with a projection and spring holding devices having shanks adapted to enter said bores and body portions adapted to fit in said grooves, said body portions being provided at their free ends with heads adapted to engage the projection on the block, substantially as shown and described.

4. Aknife-sharpening device comprising an oblong block provided at one end with a handle and at the opposite end with longitudinal bores, and in one edge thereof with longitudinal grooves, said block being also provided at said edge and adjacent to the handle with a projection and spring holding devices having shanks adapted to enter said bores and body portions adapted to fit in said grooves, said body portions being provided at their free ends with heads adapted to engage the projection on the block, and a sheet of emery-paper adapted to be folded around said block and to be held in place by said spring holding devices, substantially'as shown and described.
