UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW NEILSON, OF CARLETON PLACE, CANADA.
STOVEPlPE-ELBOW CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 719,494, dated February 3, 1903. Application filed October 3, 1901. Serial No. 77.489. (No model.)
To a whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW NEILsoN,a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the town of Carleton Place, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Elbow Connections; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my elbow-box connected to the lower end of a vertical stovepipe and to one end of a horizontal Stovepipe; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken on line m m of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to a box connection for an angle of two sections of a stovepipein lieu of an elbow, and has for its object the prevention of obstructions to smoke passing through the box and. to permit of the removal of ashes or the like through the doorway without disconnecting the sections.
My invention consists of an ash and soot receptacle or box having an aperture and a collar on two sides at right angles to connect with a stovepipe and an opening in one side closed by a stopper, door, or slide, so that the box will catch falling ashes and soot and when the door is opened the accumulation can be removed through the doorway and the door or stopper closed without disturbing the stovepipe.
Ais a box or ash and soot receptacle, shown in the drawings as rectangular, but which may be of any desired shape or form, into which receptacle soot and ashes fall from a stovepipe when the receptacle is attached to the lower end of a vertical Stovepipe 2say as passing through a floor.
Bis astovepipe-collararound a correspond ing circular aperture in one side of the receptacle or box A, and O is a like collar and aperture in another side of the receptacle or box A, said collars at right angles to one another and adapted to connect with a horizontal section 3 of a Stovepipe, the smoke passing through the box A.
In a vertical side of the ash-box A, oppositely to the collars which receive the horizontal section of the stovepipe, is an aper' ture or opening forming a doorway, which is closed by a removable stopperD, door, slide, or other suitable closure, said stopper provided with a wire sliding bolt E or other suitable means for locking the stopper in position or place. Preferably to make a flush surface the stopper is indented to receive the thumb-loop E of the bolt, and the stopper is diametrically provided with a groove E in which the bolt slides, and is crossed by guidepieces E to prevent the bolt buckling.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a Stovepipe-elbow connection, the combination with an ash-box provided with an aperture, a closure removably inserted in said aperture and provided with a groove, guide-pieces spanning said groove and a slidable bolt adapted to operate in said groove, said bolt being provided with a thumb-loop, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. .h
ANDREW NEIIJSON.
