Be it known that I, JOHN J. PRooHAzKA, a citizen of the United Statesof America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler and Furnace Ash-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of ash pans used in connection with the ash pits of house heating furnaces and boilers and has for its object To provide a structural formation and association of parts, whereby all the ashes that drop from the grate are directed into a pan or receiver of convenient size, thereby avoiding dust and the use of a shovel .in removing the ashes, and whereby a removal ofthe appliance can be conveniently accomplished where through neglect of the. attend ant, the ash pit of the furnace becomes unduly filled with ashes, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the vertical inclosingwall as a furnace ash pit of a round or other usual form, andhaving an entrance opening or doorway 2, as shown.
3 designates an ash pan of the usual open top, and preferably formed with straight and parallel side walls as shown, The present improvement involves in connection with the above described or usual construction of a furnace ash pit and removable ash pan, a detail structure as follows 4 designates a pair of deflector plates movably associated with opposed side walls of the ash pan '3 by detachable hinge connections as follows:
6 and 7 designate interengaging pivot knuckles or eyes, formed on one edge of each deflector plate 4 and on an edge of each side wall of the ash pan 3, and adapted to receive a pivot rod 8 by which the parts are connected together in a pivotal manner, capable of disassemblage by the removal of said pivot rod. To such ends said pivot rod is provided with an operating. handle 9 Y of any usual form for convenient manipulation. I
In the preferred construction shown, the pivot rod 8 is formed with a non-circular portion 10 adapted to engage in a similarly formed outer knuckle 7 of a deflector plate 4 to provide an operative connection whereby'a swinging movement of said deflector plate 4 can be attained by a corresponding turning movement of said pivot rod by the operator. 7 I
In actual use, and with the ash pan 3 in place in the ash pit, the deflector plates 4 are turned into an inclined position with their free ends resting against the side walls of the ash pit as shown. When it is desired to remove the ash pan, the deflector plates 4' are turned over onto the top of the ashes in said pan, to cover and inclose the same, after which the ash pan is withdrawn from the ash pit for the ordinary dumping operation. When through neglect on the part of the attendant the ashpit becomes unduly filled and clogged up with ashes, thus preventing a local operation of the deflector plates and a removal of the ash pan with said plates connected thereto, the present improvement affords a ready means for over- 7 coming the difliculty, by a removal of the pivot rods 8, so as to permit of a separate withdrawal of the ash pan proper, a subsequent withdrawal of the deflector plates and nary manner.
