Description

PATENTED JAN. 20, 1903.
TRY-SQUARE FOR DIE MAKERS USE.
APPLIOATION FILED DEC. 30, 1901.
10 MODEL.
litre OTTO W. COOK, OF NILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRY-SQUARE FOR DIE-MAKERS USE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,913, dated January 20, 1903.
Application filed December 30, 1901- Serial No. 87,748. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO W. COOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Try-Squares for Die- Makers Use, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in try-squares, and relates more particularly to that class that are used by diemakers and other mechanics wherein it is desired to obtain a slight adjustment of the blade.
The present invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the blade of the try-square is allowed but a limited movement, approximately three degrees.
Another object of the present invention is to construct a device of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully descril ed,aud specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, showing in dotted lines the limited movement of the blade. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the lines 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 represents the stoclgwhichis centrally slotted, as shown at 2. In said slot is pivotally secured a blade 3, said blade being secured by means of the tooth 4 extending through the stock and slot 2.
The reference-numeral 5 represents a setscrew passing through the slot 6, formed in the blade, said set-screw being preferably countersunk in the stock, as shown at 7. The slot 6 is only slightly larger than the screw 5 and allows only a slight adjustment of the blade, as shown in dotted lines.
The vertical member of the blade is of less width than the stock, permitting the use of the rear side of the stock irrespective of the angular adjustment of the horizontal member of the blade, since in any instance the rear end of the latter will not project beyond the rear side of the stock. By slotting the stock a greater portion of its length and forming the vertical member of the blade relatively long I am enabled to pivot the latter within the stock and confine its every movement therein, thus decreasing the liability of the blade shifting with relation to the stock by diminishing exposed parts apt to be engaged accidentally and cause the parts to become out of adjustment.
It will be notedthat the above-described device is extremely simple, strong, and may be easily manipulated to the desired angle, and the slot 6, formed in the blade, will limit the movement thereof to the desired degree.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily ap parent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A try-square comprising a stock having a slotted central portion extending in proximity to the lower end of the stock, a right-angular blade having its vertical member of less width than the width of the stock received within said slotted port-ion of the stock and entirely confined therein, the lower end of said vertical member being pivotally secured within the slotted portion of the stock, the upper portion of said vertical member having a transverse slot therein, and a set-screw passing through said transverse slot and the stock, the transverse slot being of slightly-greater width than the set-screw, to enable the Vertical member to be adjusted to diiterent angles within the stock, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OTTO W. COOK.
In presence of JOHN GROETZINGER, M. HUNTER.
