SIGHTING ATTACHMENT FOR LEVELS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,869, dated May *7, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JUSTUS A. TRAUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sighting Attachments for Levels, of which the following is a specification.

My invent-ion relates to improvements in sighting attachments for levels or other parallel-edged bars; and the objects of my invention are to produce a cheap, durable, and

efficient attachment specially adapted to be attached to the stock of a spirit-level for sighting objects.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the two ends of a spirit-level with my sighting attachments secured in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one of the said attachments on the line cc :0 of Fig. 1, (partly in elevation;) and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the other sight.

A designates the ends of the stock of a spirit-level, for which my attachments are specially designed; but it is evident that said attachments may be placed upon any bar with parallel edges which is of a size for which said attachments are adapted.

5 designates the cross-base of my attachment, which extends transversely across the top of the stock A, and is provided at each end with clamping-lugs 6 6, extending downwardly on opposite sides of the stock A. One of said lugs is provided with a set-screw, 8, for fastening the attachments upon the stock A. The base 5 is also provided with laterally-projecting wings 7 7, which widen the base sufliciently to give each attachment an extended longitudinal bearing upon the stock A. Rising above each base 5 is an upright. The upright 9 of the near sight is provided with a round hole, 10, Fig. 3, while the upright 11 of the farther sight is provided with a hair-line, 12, Fig. 4, set the same distance from the base of the attachment as is the sighting-hole 10. The use of sights like those on the

9 and 11 is too well known to require special mention, as similar sights on other structures are old.

These attachments are cheaply constructed and are attachable to and detachable from the stock ofan ordinary level or analogous bar at any desired points thereon, and they may be constructed with sufficient accuracy to be merely seated in place upon the bar, as shown at the left-hand end in Figs. 1 and 2, without any special adjustment for changing the height of the sight relatively to the base of the level. If desired, however, one or both of said attachments maybe provided with an adj Listing-screw, 13, as shown at the righthand end of Figs. 1 and 2, and in Fig. 3. The opposite one of the wings 7 may be provided on its under side with a slight downward projection, 14:, upon which the attachment may rock. By turning the screw 13 the distance of the near sight 10 from the base of the level may be adjusted so as to correspond exactly with the distance between the farthersight and the base of the level, or, in other words, so as to bring both sights into a plane which is parallel to the base of the bar upon which the attachments are mounted.

I claim as my invention 1. The herein-described sighting attachments, consisting of the

9 and 11, having, respectively, the near and farther sights, and each provided with a cross-base, from the middle portion of which said uprights project, and downwardly-projecting lugs at opposite ends of said base adapted to embrace the sides of the stock, and provided with a fastening device, whereby the upper edge of a level-stock maybe clamped between said lugs, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.

2. A sighting attachment made attachable and detachable to and from the level-stock, consisting of an upright containing a sight, a cross-base, 5, clamping-lugs 6 6, and lateral lugs 7 7, for forming an extended bearing-surface longitudinally with the level-stock, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.

3. A sighting attachment consisting of an upright containing a sight, a cross-base, 5, clamping-lugs 6 6, lateral lugs 7 7, and an adjusting-screw in one of said lateral lugs, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
