COLLAR-FOUNDATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iPatent No. 718,294, dated January 13, 1903.

Be it known that I, AARON M. WEBEB,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Collar-Foundation, of which the following is a specification;
My invention consists in an improvement in collar or stock foundations; and it has for its object to provide a foundation which will be very strong and light, which will be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and in which the foundation will be wholly or to a very great extent formed of a continuous strip of stiffening material.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view in perspective of the collar or stock foundation. Fig. 2 is an outside face view of the same in its extended position, and Fig. 3 is an inside face View of the same in its extended position.
The collar or stock foundation comprises a top band 1 and a bottom band 2, extending lengthwise of the foundation, end bands 3 and 4, connecting the ends of the top and bottom bands, and a plurality of braces 5, extending at intervals between the top and bottom bands.
The collar or stock foundation is preferably formed from a continuous strip of stiffening material-such, for instance, as a reed inclosed in a. suitable fabric casing or envelop-which strip is bent to form the top, bottom, and end bands and the braces which extend between the top and bottom bands. The body portion of the collar or stock foundation is denoted by 6, and it is made of the shape required for its particular purpose.
The body portion 6 of the foundation may be made of any desired material suitable for the purpose-such, for instance, as crinoline.
The framework is secured to the body portion 6, preferably in the following manner: The end band 3- of the stiffening material is secured to one end of the body portion. The strip is then bent to form the top band 1, which is secured along the upper edge of the body portion. The strip is then bent to form the other end band 4, which in turn is secured to the corresponding end of the body portion; The strip is then again bent to form the bottom band 2, which is secured along the lower edge of the body portion 6. It is then bent upwardly along the end band 3 and secured to the body portion. The strip is extended back and forth in a zigzag direction across the face of the body portion, be tween the top and bottom bands, from the upper end of the end band 3 to the upper end of the end band 4. It is then bent and extended downwardly along the end band 4:. The strip is then again extended back and forth in a zigzag direction across the face of the body portion 6, between the top and bottom bands, from the end band 4 to the bottom of the end band 3. The diagonal braces 5 thus formed cross each other about midway between the top and bottom bands, which diagonal braces are secured to the face of the bodyportion. I preferably secure the framework to the body portion by stitching the strip which forms the framework onto the said body portion.
The collar or stock foundation constructed as above set forth is extremely stiff and du-l "body portion of stiffening material of the required shape, a stiffeningrborder extending around the edges of the body portion and a continuous strip of diagonal cross-braces secured back and forth across the face of the body portion for stifiening the same.
