Nrrn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`ENOS L. WALKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BAS KET-WEB.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 627,283, dated June 20, 1899.
Application filed October 31 1898.
'To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOS L WALKER, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain newv and useful Improvements in Basket-VVebs, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to basket-webs; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described7 and claimed.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the basket-web as.contemplated by my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the web. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Y
In the construction of the web a plurality of thin splints l of equal length are arranged parallel with each other at slight distances apart, and woven at a right angle into said splints l are the transverse splints 2, the same being of equal length, and the ends of said transverse splints terminate at the edges of the outer pair of splints l. The ends of the splints l extend an equal distance beyond each of the outer pair of transverse splints 2, said extended ends being interwoven to form the ends of the completed basket. Arranged upon each side of the outer edge of each of the outer ends of the splints l are the flexible bands 3, preferably of wood, the same being equal in length to the splints 1,approximately half as wide as said splints, and slightly thicker than the same. These bands 3 are secured to the splints l and to the ends of the y transverse splints 2 by means of staples 4 or chants and the like-said webs to be fash-` ioned into baskets by the users, it only being necessary to bend the webinto `the shape of a basket and interweave the ends of the web Serial No. 692,507. (No model.)
and secure the ends of the reinforcing-bands the web it is not necessary to locate a band' upon the'form on which the basket is finished before said web is located thereon, and there fore much time and labor are saved in the construction and formation of a basket.
I claim- As an article of manufacture, a rectangular knockdown basket-web having four square corners and constructed with a plurality of longitudinally-extending splints l of equal length, a plurality of transversely-arranged splints 2 interwoven at right angles to the first-mentioned splints, and the reinforcingbands 3 permanently secured to each side of the outer pair of splints l and t0 the ends of the transverse splints but with their ends free, whereby the said web may be bent into the form of a rectangular basket having square corners, and the ends of the said strips may extend and be interwoven at right angles to form the ends of the basket and secured to the said reinforcing-bands after said lastd mentioned operation, the adjacent ends of said reinforcing-bands at each end of the basket being united at the center of the latter, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ENOS L. WALKER.
