UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES B. RYAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WOVEN-WIRE BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,143, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed May 23, 1888. Serial No. 274,877. (No model.)
To wil whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES B. RYAN, a citizen of lthe United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Voven-Vire Bed- Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of Wovenwire bed-bottoms comprising in their construction transverse supports, and its object is to provide a device of this character possessing advantages in point of simplicity, durability, inexpensiveness, and generally efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a bed-bottom embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Corresponding part-s in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the fralne composed of the usual side and end beams, B B and C C, respectively, connected in any suitable manner, and D the woven' wire fabric.
E designates one or more transverse strips provided through the` loops or coils of the fabric D, preferably through the process of Weaving. These strips are flexible and constructed of any suitable material, preferably metal, and may be provided with eyes e e at their ends, by which they can be fastened to the edges of the fabric, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. By the employment of these strips the fabric is greatly strengthened and prevented from stretching or sagging at the center; and, further, they retain rigidly together the convolutions of the woven fabric,
whereby the wires are caused to sustain an even tension in conjunction with each other, and wear evenly together.
fabric and secured at their ends to the frame, 5o
and, also, that they have been constructed of a series of longitudinal wires, and transverse wires crossing the same or'provided with a transverse strip upon the outer surface of such coiled wires and secured to each indi- 5 5 vidual Wire; but to such construction I make no claim, my invention consisting of the combination herein described and claimed.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a bed-bottom composed of a frame and 6o a woven-wire fabric, the combination, with such fabric, of stiffening rods or strips passed transversely through its meshes and having their ends connected to the side edges of the fabric, substantially as described.
2. In a bed-bottom, the combination of a rectangular frame, a woven-wire bottom disconnected at the sides from the frame, and composed of longitudinal intermeshing wires, and one or more transverse strips secured to the edges of the woven-wire bottom and extending through the coils formed by the intermeshing wires, substantially as and for the purpose set forth'.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AS. B. RYAN.
