SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,265, dated January 13, 1903.

Be it known that I, IsAAc B. MACOMBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Newport, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ankle-Supports for Skates, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of supports which are removably attached to the rear standard of the skate-runner, with a legband and a supporting-rod extending vertically from the skate-runner along the side of the leg of the wearer; and it consists in an improved clamping device for attaching the supporting-rod to the skate-runner and in improved means for connecting the leg-band to the supporting-rod and for rendering the band adjustable.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is abroken side view showing the rear end of a skate with the attaching-clamp, the supporting-rod, and the leg-band. Fig. 2 is a top View of the leg-band and the swivel device by means of which it is connected to the supporting-rod. Fig. 3 is a top View of the clamp secured to the rear standard of the skaterunner, the said standard being shown in section. Fig. 4. shows a section of the socket for holding the snpporting-rod, taken on the line a; 03 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows a cross-section of the leg-band, taken on line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 z of- Fig. 2. Fig. '7 isa detail side view showing the catch for holding the ends of the legband together. In the drawings, a represents the rear portion of the skate-runner, and b the rear standard, to which my improved clamping device 0 is attached, the said device being formed in two members (1 and c, which are connected with each other by means of the screw n. The clamping member (I is preferably provided with the lateral extensions g g, which serve to impart stability to the clamping device when secured to the standard I) of the skate-runner. The member (1 is also provided with the socket'h, which is adapted to receive the lower end 1; of the supporting-rod j, and with the fowardly-extending projection is, which passes through a perforation made in the end portion Z of the member eof the clamp, the opposite end of the said clamping member e being provided with the screwthreaded ear m, adapted to receive the thread of the screw 72., which is held in the perforated ear 0 of the clamping member (1, the said member (1 beingalso provided with the recess p, which forms ahook at its rearportion adapted to engage with the rear edgeq of the standard I), the said standard being provided with the recess or notch r, as shownby the dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the members d and e of the clamping device are secured to the standard I), as shown in the drawings, the bend s of the member e will enter the recess or notch t' at the front edge of thestandard b, and the clamping device will be firmly held to the standard. The lower end of the supporting-rodj is provided-with the annular groove it, which is adapted to receive the point of the screw 1), by means of which the end of the supporting-rod is held in its socket h and made adapted for pivotal movement therein, and I prefer to inclinethe outer face of the recess p at thepoint 10, as shown, and to provide the angle 8 of the member e with a corresponding inclination 00, whereby when the two clamping members are drawn together by means of the screw n the inner faces of the clamping members d and ewill be drawn inwardly against the sides of the standard I).

The leg-band a is made in two parts b 19 the part b being provided with the series of perforations c c and the part 19 provided with a single perforation 0 the said perforations being adapted to receive the outwardlyprojecting stud d of the band-holding piece 6', which swivels upon the collar f, adjustably held upon the supporting-rod j by means of the screw 9', which may either be a clamping-screw, as shown in Fig. 2, or a set-screw, as shown in Fig. 8, and by shifting the stud d into the different perforations of the part b of the leg-band the said band may be either increased or diminished in size, as desired. The part b of the leg-band is also provided with the catch projection h, which is adapted for engagement with the perforation i, made in the overlapping part b of the band. The swivel-piece e is held upon. the adjustable collar f by means of the flangej, as shown in Fig. 8.

I claim as my invention 1. In an ankle-support for skates, the combina'tion of the leg-band a, and the supporting-rod j, with the clamping device 0, comprising the clamping members d and e and the clamping-screw n, and having a loose socket connection with the supporting-rod, one of the said clamping members being provided with the forwardly-extending projection 70, and the other with the receiving-perforation 76', substantially as described.

2. In an ankle-support for skates, the combination of the clamp member d, provided with the socket h, and the forward projection 70, with the clamp member 6, provided with the perforation 7c, adapted to receive the projection 7c, and the clamping-screw n, substantially as described.

3. In an ankle-support for skates, the combination of the clamp member (1, provided with the socket h, the forward projection is, and the inclined surface w, with the clamp member 2, provided with the perforation 7c, adapted to receive the projection 70, and with theinclined surface 00, and the clamping-screw 72, substantially as described.

4. In an ankle-support for skates, the combination of the adjusable leg-band a, provided with the perforations c,With the swivelpiece e, provided with the engaging stud d, the adjustable collar f, and the supporting rod j, substantially as described.

5. In an ankle-support for skates, the combination of the supporting-rod j, the adjustable collar f, and the swivel-piece 6, connected therewith,with the leg-band a, formed of the two parts I) and b held together upon the stud d of the swivel-piece, and provided with locking means at their engaging ends, substantially as described.
