TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: A
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TEMPLE, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo, and in the State of Indiana.,` have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stitching-Clamp for Saddlers and Harness- Makers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to .the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this speoication, A and B represent two'jws, which are hinged together at one end, .their other ends being free to play to and from each other. H -represents the bolt of the hinge connecting the two jaws together. Around this bolt is coiled a spring, Gr, the ends of -sad spring resting against the jaws iu such a manner as to press them apart. A chain or cord, J, prevents too wide a separation of the jaws. C represents a tongue, which has two arms C C. The lower vends of these arms are turned at right angles to them, and screws D D pass through these ends, and through eers e upon the jaw A, and confine the tongue to said 'jaw A. The set-screws D D serve not only to confine this tongue to the jaw, but serve to raise and lower said tongue with reference to the lips :c z ot' the jaws. The upper edge of the tongue is provided with a curved groove.
The object of this invention is more particularly to assist in the making of round work, in harness and saddle-manufacturiers.
I represents the section of a piece of round work, held in'the groove of the tongue C, between the two jaws, in 'a position for stitching it. F represents n guide upon the tongue, which passes through a suitable opening te receive it, at ear, d, upon/the jaw A. This instrument is used between the jaws of the common stitchingclamp. The jaws A and B are pressed together by the jaws of the clamp, while they are opened by the coiled spring G. The tongue .is raised and lowered or regulated to suit the size of the Work, by means ofthe screws D D, as has beenset forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desirert'o secure by Letters Patent, isn- 1. The jaws A and B, constructed substantially as represented,.hinged together audoperated`upon by means ot' spring G, as and for the purpose set forth. t
2. The tongue C, used in combination with the jaws A and B, und regulated substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this-4th daypf September, 1867.
