ASSEMBLI'NG DEVICE FOR FORMING STRAWS INTO COVER-BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of .Letters Patent No. 717,476, dated December 0, 1902- Original application filed November 6, 1900, Serial No. 35,665. No. 751213.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATHIAS VAN DEN HEU- VEL, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at Gangelt, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Assembling Devices for Forming Straws into Cover-Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in assembling devices for forming blanks for straw bottle-covers, and it is a division of my application filed November 6, 1900, Serial No. 35,665.
The invention aimsto provide a device of the above-named character for assembling and folding straws or the like into blanks for forming straw or like bottle covers, which shall be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to set up; and to this end it consists of the novel com binatlon and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly poin ted out in the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a front elevation of my new and improved assembling device for forming blanks for straw bottle-covers. Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are sectional details showing the different positions of the folding mechanism in the operation of folding a cover-blank.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 denotes a platform which is usually arranged at the front of an apparatus for forming bottle-covers, (not shown,) as well as being secured thereto in any desirable manner.
The platform 1 rests upon the cross-rods 2, which are supported by means of the vertical standards 3. Secured to the side edge of the platform 1 and to one of the cross-rods 2 is a laterally-extending plate 4, provided with a slot 5,in which operates a set-screw 6, attached to a gage-plate 7. of the set-screw b. The plate 4 has its upper face in alinement with the upper face of the platform 1. Secured upon the upper face of the platform 1 is a retaining-bracket 8, substantially of angular formation,and is adapted to forming a guide for and retain in position upon the platform 1 the folding-block 9. This folding-block 9 is constructed with an overhanging edge forming a laterally-extending folding-arm 10. The block 9 is further provided with an opening 11, the function of which will be hereinafter described. The folding-block9 is adapted to operate transversely of the platform 1.
The platform 1 is provided near one side with an opening 12, having one of its walls beveled, as at 13, to permit of the requisite operation of one arm of a bell-crank lever, to be hereinafter described. The platform 1 has also formed in its inner face alongitudipally-extending groove, as at 14, in the side thereof opposite to that of the opening 12. The platform 1 is further provided with a headed guide pin or stop 15, which is secured to the upper face thereof near the inner end. The platform 1 is further provided with a guide-strip 16, arranged at the side of the folding-block 12, as well as extending above the same.
At the front of the platform 1 a pair of catches 17 are attached, which secure in position the clamping-rod 18. This clampingrod is removable and has its inner end bifurcated, as at 19, so it can engage around the headed pin 15. The catches 17 engage the outer end of the rod 18 for securingit in position. The function of the rod 18 will be hereinafter described.
The reference-numeral 20 denotes a foottreadle, which is pivotally secured at its inner end with the standards 3. The foot-treadle 20 has mounted thereon the bracket 21, in which is pivotally connected the lower end of the operating-rod 22. This rod extends upwardly at an inclination and then is bent rearwardly at an inclination, as at 23 and then bent in a vertical manner, as at 24. The upper end of the vertical portion of the rod 22 is pivotally connected, as at 25, to the lower arm of a Vertically-extending bell-crank lever 26. This lever is supported in any desirable manner from the platform 1. The upper arm of the bell-crank lever is formed with a head 27, which engages in the opening 11 of the folding-block. The upper arm of the bellcrank lever extends through the opening 12 in the platform 1.
The reference-numeral 28 denotes a pair of springs, which are attached at theirlower end to the treadle 20 and at their upper end connected with the platform 1. The function of the springs 28 is to return the treadle to an elevated position.
The operation of the device is as follows: The straws or the like are cut to the length required and spread out across the platform 1, their ends being placed against the gageplate 7 in order to keep them uniform, the gage-plate being suitably adjusted. The clamping-rod 18 is then placed in position, so that the straws will be pressed against the platform 1. The forward end of the rod is then secured in position by the catches 17.
This operation having been completed, the treadle 20 is pressed down, whereupon the folding-block 9 will be moved toward the rod 18, the arm 10 of the block 9 engaging and thereby bending the straws in half or folding one half over the other. The treadle is then released, after which the block 9, the bell crank lever 26, operating-rod 22, and treadle 20 will be returned to their original position under the action of the springs 28. A suitable pairof tongs, as indicated at let, is then inserted in the groove 14 and clamped around the folded blank. (See Fig. 5.) The clamp-' ingrod 18 is then withdrawn, releasing the blank from the table, and the blank is then placed into the cover-forming apparatus (not shown) by the tongs 14.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device for assembling straws for forming cover-blanks, a platform provided with an opening having one of its walls beveled, said platform adapted to receive the straws to be formed into cover-blanks, a support for said platform, a gaging means for the straws secured to one side of said platform and projecting therefrom, a headed pin carried by the platform, a clamping-rod for the straws adapted to have one end engage said pin to connect the rod with the platform, means connected to the platform and engaging the other end of said rod for removably securing it to the platform, a slidable block operating upon the platform, provided with an opening and a folding-arm adapted to engage the straws and fold them when the block is operated, a bell-crank lever pivotallysupported from the platform and having one arm extending through the opening of the platform and into the opening of the block for operating it, and means connected with the other arm of the bell-crank and with the support and adapted when operated, to cause the operation of the bell-crank, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a device for assembling straws for forming cover-blanks, a platform adapted to receive the straws and provided with an opening, means adapted to be removably connected to the platform for clamping the straws thereto, a gaging means for the straws connected to one side of the platform, a slidable block operating upon the platform, provided with an opening and a folding-arm adapted to engage the straws and fold them when the block is operated, guide means connected to the platform for said block, a bell-crank connected with the platform and having one arm extending through the opening of the platform and into the opening of the block for operatingit when the bell-crank is actuated, and a spring-return mechanism connected with the other arm of the bell-crank and when operated adapted to actuate the bell-crank to operate the block and when released adapted to return the block to its normal position.
3. In a device for assembling straws for forming cover-blanks, a platform for receiving the straws, gaging means carried by the platform for the straws, a headed pin connected to the platform, a clam ping-rod adapted to have one end engage the said pin for connecting it to the platform, a pair of catches attached to the platform and adapted to engage the other end of the rod for removably connectiu g it to the platform, a slidable block mounted upon the platform and provided with an arm adapted to engage the straws when the block is operated to fold them, means suspended from the platform and engaging the block and adapted when operated to operate the block, guide means for the block, a support for the platform, a treadle carried by the platform, a rod for connecting the treadle to said operating means, and a pair of springs connected with the platform and to the treadle for causing the treadle to resume its normal position when released.
