T 0 all whom it may concern Be it. known that we, GEORGE 1V. GUIN and LESTER 1V. GUIN, citizens of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing B/Iachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw filing devices.
The object of the invention is to prov de a saw-filing device embodying a feeding means for the file which is constructed and arranged to slide along over the saw and feed accurately and progressively step by step under the influence of the raising and lowering action of the file.
Another object resides in the provislon of means for holding and clamping the saw blade in a fixed position beneath a carriage which moves step by step over the fixed saw and connected to which is the file carrying means by which the carriage is fed over the saw step by step.
A still further object is to provide a saw filing device embodying means to support the file with the file supporting means so associated with the various parts of the device that the device may be readily operated to set same for the filing of the teeth of the saw simply through the manipulation of the handle to which the file is connected.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion illustrating our invent-ion. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the frame-work. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of our invention disconnected from the framework. Fig. 1 is an enlarged view of the device in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line a a of Fig. 3, with the file supporting means removed.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, there is shown a frame-work comprising a base 6, at one side of which are spaced standards 7 connected by a bar 7 constituting a Xed jaw adapted to cooperate wi h a movable jaw 8, secured to levers S, which are preferably pivotally mounted between the flanges of the members 9, which form standards arranged opposite the spaced standards 7. One means for pivoting the levers 8 is to mount the same on the rods 10 fitted in the ears 11 at the upper ends of the members 9,

adapted to operate. The lower ends of the lever 8 are provided each with an off-set portion 12 disposed preferably directly opposite the shaft 13 journaled in the members 9 so that upon raising the lever 14 secured to the shaft 13 the eccentricslt of the shaft 13 will engage the off-set portions 12 of the levers,

Formed in the outer face of each jaw longitudinally thereof and adjacent its upper edge is a groove 17. These grooves 17 form guides for the slidable carriage A, which carries the file holding frame B. The carriageconsists of end-pieces 1S andside-sills 19, the latter having ears 20, to which may be pivoted by means of a bolt 21 a block 22 which is adapted to swing vertically on its pivot-bolt 21. The end-pieces 18 of the carriage are provided with leg portions 23, whose feet portions 24 are directed inwardly into the aforesaid guiding grooves 17 so that while the carriage A may be moved longitudinally over the jaw members it is held againstlateral displacement thereon.
The file carrying frame B consists of sidemembers 25 which are connected by front and rear bars 26 and 27 respectively, the free ends of which are secured to the sleeves 28- and 28 in any suitable manner. The sleeve 28 carries a shiftable block 29, having a.

and is locked against movement by a screw 29 The opposite sleeve 28 is interiorly screwthreaded to receive a screw-threaded clamping block 30, having a socket in its inner end to receive the opposite end of the file, same being provided with a handle 30 with which to adjust the same to clamp the tile against movement relatively to its supporting frame, and with which to reciprocate said frame and to lift the file out of engagement with the teeth of the saw a.
To provide for the automatic feeding of the carriagewhich supports the file in an accurately and progressively step by stepmotion under the influence of the raising and lowering action of the file, we secure to the swinging block 22, by means of a bolt or other suitable element 31, a clamping member 32 which has feet 33 at its inne end provided with bearings 34 to fit over the rear bar 27 of the file carrying frame to pivotally mount the latter on the block 22. The clamp 32 is bifurcated at its forward end and provided with forwardly directed fingers 35 which overhang the front bar 26 of the file carrying frame so that the upward swinging movement of the latter is limited by the engagement of said front bar 26 of the file carrying frame with said stops or fingers 3b.
Secured to the outer face of the jaw 8 is a rack 36 which has teeth on opposite edges rendering it reversible. With one set of teeth at a time there cooperates a dog 37 pivotally mounted at 38 to a lug 39 depending from the aforesaid block 22. The dog 37 is curved and normally has both ends engaging teeth of the rack 36 to prevent accidental sliding movement of the carriage while the file-frame is being moved transversely of the carriage in its bearings 34 when filing a tooth of the saw. This dog is adjustable, being formed preferably in two parts and connected by means of suitable fastenings 40. The purpose of adjusting the length of the dog is to adapt the same to the teeth on either side of the feed rack, which latter may be reversed, as has been stated, reversal being done to meet the requirements of a coarse or fine toothed saw. The rear end a of the dog 37 is yieldingly held in contact with the feed or spacing bar 36 by means of a spring 41 secured in any suitable manner to the block 22, preferably, however, by means of fastenings 42.
If desired, there may be secured to the under side of the carriage A between its end pieces 18 suitable bowed springs 43 which are adapted to bear against the upper faces of the saw clamping members to frictionally resist accidental movement of the feeding device.
in actual practice the saw is first clamped between the clamping jaws 7 and S in a manner now well understood. The carriage is mounted in the guideways 17 with the parts assembled as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, with the file C in engagement with a tooth of the saw. The handle 30 is grasped by the operator and the file carrying frame is slid transversely over the block 22 in the bearings of the clamp 32 to file the tooth. To file the next adjacent tooth the handle 30 is lifted, which causes an upward swinging movement of the file carrying frame 15. The bar 26 of the latter engages the stop fingers 3-5 of the clamp 32 and by continued upward movement of the handle the block 22 is swung on its pivot 21 with the result that the dog 37 is moved forwardly one tooth in the rack to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4. By next lowering the handle the dog causes the carriage to move forwardly, bringing the file in engagement with the next tooth, when the same may be filed as was the former tooth.
The upward swinging of the block 22 is limited by a curved arm 44 which projects from the rear of the block 22 and which carries a screw 45 adapted to engage the rear end part 18 of the carriage A. By adjusting this screw 45 in the arm 44 the limit of the swinging movement of the block 22 is adjusted. An adjusting screw 45 passing through the block 22 and engaging the carriage A limits the downward movement of the latter at its free end.
In order to permit the saw to be properly and rapidly positioned between the clamping members, so that the full length thereof will extend equally the proper distance above the jaws, we provide spaced swinging arms 46, fixedly mounted on the shaft 47, which latter is provided with a handle 48 for rocking the shaft. Each arm is provided with a laterally extending free end 49 of step formation, and which ends extend over the jaws above the saw, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when in a raised position. In Fig. 1 is shown by full lines the lowered or normal position of the swinging arms, and by dotted lines when in raised position. The lower edge of the saw is held against vibration by alining adjustable screw-rods 50 and 51, mounted on each of the levers 8 and standards 7, which bear against the saw when the saw is clamped between the aws.
It will thus be seen that our improved saw-filing device is operated by simply raising and lowering the file by grasping the handle or the body of the file itself so that the operator need not take his hands off of the file at any time in order to operate the feed device.
That we claim is:
1. In a saw filing device, the combination of a frame, clamping members mounted on the frame to support the saw, a feed rack mounted on one of the clamping members, a carriage mounted on the clamping members, a block pivoted on top of the carriage, a dog pivotally mounted on one side of the block for engagement with the rack to hold the carriage against accidental movement, and a file carrying frame slidably mounted on top of said pivoted block and carrying a file to file the teeth of the saw during the sliding action of the file carrying frame, and which latter frame is also swingingly mounted on the block to swing the same and thereby lift the file away from the saw and operate the dog so that the carriage may be moved step by step by the swinging action of the saw carrying frame.
2. In a saw filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, a carriage slidable on the saw supporting means, a member pivoted on the carriage, a clamping member secured on top of the pivoted member, and a file carrying frame slidably and swingingly held on said pivoted member by said clamping member.

4. In a saw filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, a carriage slidable on the supporting means, a member pivoted on the carriage, a feed rack on the supporting means, a two-part adjustable dog carried by the pivoted member to engage the feed rack and hold the carriage in fixed position, a file carrying frame, a member secured to the pivoted member to slidably and swingingly secure the saw carrying frame to the pivoted member and provided with projections spaced over the pivoted member, the saw carrying frame engaging the projections of the saw carrying frame securing member during upward swing of the .saw carrying frame and thereby swinging the aforesaid pivoted member to operate said dog to efiect a. step-by-step movement of the carriage.
5. In a saw filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, a carriage slidable on the supporting means, a member pivoted on the carriage, a feed rack on the supporting means, a two-part adjustable dog carried by the pivoted member to engage the feed rack and hold the carriage in fixed position, a file carrying frame, a member secured to the pivoted member to slidably and swingingly secure the saw carrying frame to the pivoted member and provided with projections spaced over the pivoted member, the saw carrying frame engaging the projections of the saw carrying frame securing member during upward swing of the saw carrying frame and thereby swinging the aforesaid pivoted member to operate said dog to effect a step-by-step movement of the carriage, and an arm projecting from the pivoted member for engagement with the carriage to limit the upward swinging movement of the pivoted member.

In a saw-filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, of a carriage mounted on the saw supporting means, a pivoted member supported on top of the carriage, a file carrying frame slidably and swingingly mounted on top of said pivoted member, so that it may have sliding movement on the pivoted member transversely of the carriage to file the teeth of the saw and whereby the file carrying frame may also have, vertical swinging movement, a combined holding and feeding means to hold thecarriage against accidental movement while filing a tooth of the saw and which is thrown out of operative position during the vertical swinging movement of the file carrying frame and positioned so that under the influence of the vertical swinging movement of said frame the carriage may be moved by said combined holding and feeding means progressively step by step over the saw holding means to effect filing of the successive teeth of the saw.
7; In a saw-filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, of a carriage mounted on the saw supporting means, a pivoted member on top of the carriage, a file carrying frame slidably and swingingly mounted on top of said pivoted. member, so that the file carrying frame may have sliding movement on the pivoted member transversely of the carriage to file the teeth of the saw and whereby the file carrying frame may also have vertical swinging movement, a feed rack bar secured to the saw supporting means, a dog pivoted on one side of the pivoted member for engagement with the feed rack to hold the carriage against accidental movement during the filing of a tooth of the saw and which dog is thrown out of operative holding relation with the feed rack bar and into feeding relation therewith during'the vertical swinging movement of the file carrying frame whereby the carriage may be fed progressively step by step to successively file the successive teeth of the saw.
8. In a saw-filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, of a carriage mounted on the saw supporting means, a member pivoted at one end to the carriage and normally straddling the latter, a file carrying frame slidably and swingingly se cured on top of the pivoted member, so that the file carrying frame may have sliding movement on the pivoted member transversely of the carriage to file the teeth of the saw and whereby the file carrying frame may also have vertical swinging movement, means to hold the carriage against accidental movement while filing a tooth of the saw and which is thrown out of operative holding position and converted into feeding means during the vertical swinging movement of the file carrying frame so that under the influence of the vertical swinging movement of said frame the carriage may be moved progressively step by step over the saw holding means to effect filing the successive teeth of the saw, and means connected to the carriage and engaging the saw supporting means to frictionally resist movement of the carriage.

In a saw-filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, a carriage mounted on the saw supporting means, a pivoted member straddling the carriage, a file carrying frame slidably and swingingly mounted on said pivoted member, so that the file carrying frame may have sliding movement on the pivoted member transversely of the carriage to file the teeth of the saw and whereby the file carrying frame may also have vertical swinging movement, a feed rack bar secured to the saw supporting means, a dog pivoted on the said pivoted member for engagement with the feed rack to hold the carriage against accidental movement during the filing of a tooth of the saw and which dog is thrown out of operative holding relation with the feed rack bar during the vertical swinging movement of the file carrying frame and operated to engage said bar to feed the carriage progressively stey by step over the saw supporting means to successively file the successive teeth of the saw, and bowed fiat springs connected to the under side of the carriage and intermediate their ends engaging the saw supporting means to frictionally resist movement of the carriage.
10. In a saw-filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, a carriage mounted on the saw supporting means, a pivoted member mounted on top of the carriage, a file carrying frame mounted on top of the pivoted member to slide and to swing on said pivoted member, and means carried by and projecting from one end of said pivoted member for engagement with the carriage to limit the upward swinging movement of the file carrying frame.
11. In a saw filing device, the combination of means to support the saw, a carriage mounted on the saw supporting means, a swinging file carrying means supported on the carriage and movable thereon, means interposed between the carriage and the supporting means to effect a step by step movement of the carriage over the supporting means upon swinging movement in one direction of the file carrying means, and means carried on the under side of the carriage to engage the saw supporting means to fric tionally resist movement of the carriage.
