whereby a band saw may be readily fed therethrough to permit the teeth to be properly set and also filed.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient setting device used in connection with the present machine, whereby the teeth of a saw may he efiiciently set, and the saw may at the same time be firmly held in the proper position to be acted upon by the saw setting apparatus.
A still further object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient means for facilitating the filing of the teeth of a saw and also raising the file from the saw when it is desired to feed the saw longitudinally of the machine.
lVith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinaiter fully described and claimed.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the base or support of the machine upon which is carried a feeding frame 2. This feeding frame 2 supports a shaft 3, and this shaft in turn carries a gear 4 and is provided upon its rear face with a cam 5. A supporting ear 6 is carried by the frame 2 and a swinging arm 7 is pivotally mounted upon the ear 6 as is illustrated in Fig. 6. This arm 7 carries a downwardly extending end 8, which downwardly extending end 8 in turn carries a threaded bolt 9, the bolt 9 engaging the face of the cam 5 and causing the swinging arms 7 to have an oscillatory movement as the wheel a rotates. A feeding finger or arm 10 is pivotally carried by the pivoted arm 7, and this finger 10 is provided with a downwardly bent end 11 for engaging the teeth of the saw 12 and feeding the same forwardly through the machine.
The casing 2 is provided with an interior compartment 13 in which compartment is carried a hollow frame 14, the hollow frame 1 1 being pivotally mounted upon a shaft 15. The shaft 8 carries a cam 16 within the hollow frame 14, and it will, therefore, be seen that as the shaft 3 rotates, the hollow frame 14 will be oscillated or swung upon its pivot 15. This frame lat carries at its upper end a transversely extending bar 17. This bar 17 carries an arm 18 near each end thereof, the arms being held upon the bar 17 by means of the lock nuts 19. Setting fingers 20 are pivotally carried upon the upper ends of the arms 18, and thumb screws 21 are threaded through the arms 18 to limit the upward swinging movement of the setting fingers 20. Flat springs 22 are mounted upon each side of the casing 2 and are adapted to normally exert a downward pressure upon the arms 18 and normally hold the same in a neutral position. A saw receiving slot 23 is formed in the casing 2 and is adapted to receive the saw 21 for the purpose of facilitating the setting of the teeth by means of the setting fingers 20 as hereinafter described.
'From the foregoing description it will be seen that as the shaft 8 is rotated, the cam 16 will engage the side walls of the hollow casing 14 and cause the same to swing, thereby reciprocating the bar 17 and causing the setting fingers 20 to alternately engage the teeth of the saw 24:, the springs 22 returning the arms 18 to their normal position. It will be seen that by means of the present mechanism, the setting fingers 20 will only engage every alternate tooth, and, therefore, permit the teeth to be properly set in opposite directions as illustrated in Fig. 8. The transversely extending bar 17 is set in the bifurcated upper end of the hollow casing 1 1 and is held therein by means of a pin 26 as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 7. The finger 10 feeds the saw forwardly, as above described, the distance of one tooth and as the frame oscillates with the rotation of the cam 16, thesetting fingers 20 will alternately hammer against the respective teeth of the saw and set the same at the proper angle, for the free ends of the fingers 20 are ar ranged at a proper angle to set the teeth of the saw when the fingers 20 are brought engagement therewith.
- As is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, a saw clamping frame 27 is also carried by the base 1 and is arranged in close prox- V imity to the frame 2. The frame 27 which is illustrated in detail in Figs. 9 and 19 comprises a main body portion constituting a primary jaw 28 and a pivotally mounted clamping jaw 29. The shaft 3 above men-- Itioned passes through the primary jaw 28 as is illustrated in Fig. 9. The jlw '29 is pivotally mounted upon a journal pin 30, and both the primary and auxiliary jaws are provided with saw gripping lips 31 and 32 respectively as illustrated in Fig. 9. A securing pin '33 is carried by the primary jaw '28 and engages a coil spring 34 which coil spring passes through an aperture 35 carried by the auxiliary jaw 29 and is held therein by means of the transversely extending pin 36. The auxiliary jaw 29 is provided with a downwardly extending finger 37 which is adapted to fit over the lower portion of the primary jaw 28 as is illus trated in Fig; 9. The finger 37 carries a threaded pin 38 and is held firmly thereon by means of the link nut 39. This threaded pin 38 engages a sliding plunger A0 which spring is adapted to pull inwardly upon the jaw 29 and release the saw 21 from the clamping aws 28 and 29. hen the cam 1s 1n the position shown in Flg. 9 the plunger 10 will be forced outwardly and in this man-' ner cause the saw to be firmly clamped between the lips of the jaws 28 and 29, but when the cam rotates so as to release the pressure fromthe pin 410, the spring 34 will draw inwardly upon the jaw 29 and permit the saw to be released and allow the feeding finger 10 to move the saw 21- forwardly.
The shaft 11 carries a pulley or balance wheel 4 1, and this shaft A1 also carries a gear 45 which moves with the gear 1 for the purpose of driving the gear 41 and consequently the shaft 3. This shaft 41 carries at its forward end a wheel 16, which wheel is clearly illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 and carries a crank handle 47 for the purpose of allowing the wheel to be operated by hand when so desired. It should be understood that if it be so desired a belt may be passed over the pulley 44: for thepurpose of actuating the machine by some foreign driving power. j
A supporting yoke 48 is carried by the main support 1, and this supporting yoke 18 is provided at one end with'an upwardly extending arm 19, and the supporting yoke carries at its opposite end a pivotally mounted lever or arm 50. The yoke 18 also is provided with an upwardly extending intermediate arm 51. A pair of track rods 52 is carried by the arms 49 and 51, and these track rods 52 constitute supports for the arms 58. The arms 53 are .fast on the rods 52 and these rods slide through the arms 19 and 51. One of these arms 53 is provided A shield 13 is carried fingers 61 to which lifting fingers are ad-' justably secured the file-clamping members 62. These clamping members 62 are longitudinally slotted as at 63 and are firmly held in an adjusted position upon the fingers 61 by means of the bolts 64. The clamps 62 carry threaded thumb nuts 65 which are adapted to engage the file engaging centers 66 for the purpose of supporting the centers in an operative position in order to engage the file 67 illustrated clearly in Figs. 4 and 5.
A coil spring 68 is connected at its lower end to one of the track bars 52 and is connected at its upper end to the transversely extending tie bar 60 for the purpose of normally holding the file 67 out of engagement with the teeth of the saw.
A tripping finger 69 is pivotally supported upon the intermediate arm 51, and this tripping finger is provided with a forwardly extending lip 70 which fits under the transversely extending tie bar 60 so as to facilitate the lifting of the tie bar 60 and the throwing of the file 67 into an operative position. An adjusting screw 71 is carried by the lower end of the tripping finger 69 and engages the cam ring 72 carried by the wheel 46. The ring 72 is so formed as to have its respective ends tapered to permit the tripping finger 69 to slide therefrom and also automatically reset itself upon the band or ring 72 as the wheel 46 rotates. 7
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient mechanism has been produced for the purpose of resetting, filing the teeth of a band saw and also feeding the saw through the machine so as to allow the different attachments to be actuated in order to properly set and also file the teeth of a saw. It will be seen that the saw will be fed through the machine by means of the feeding finger 10 above described and that the setting fingers 20 will cause the teeth ofthe saw to be set at their proper angles. These setting fingers as well as the feeding finger are actuated by means of theshaft 3 which is driven by means of the shaft 41, and this shaft 41 carries the wheel 46 which may be actuated by means of the crank handle 47. This crank handle 47 is pivotally connected to a link 73, and this link 7 3 in turn engages a crank arm 74 carried by the shaft 75, which shaft in turn engages the arm 50, thereby causing the filesupporting arms 53 to be moved with the track arms 52 and impart reciprocating motion to the file 67. It should be understood that as the saw is fed forwardly, the file 67 will be lifted out of engagement with the teeth of the saw owing to the fact that the tripping finger 69 will be swung by means of the clamp ring 72 carried by the wheel 46. The file 67 will then drop back upon the teeth of the saw, and as the file-carrying arms are reciprocating due to the continuous rotation of the wheel 46, the teeth of the saw will be properly filed.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a support, a yoke supported upon said support and provided with a plurality of upwardly extending arms, a plurality of track rods carried by said arms, a file mechanism slidably mounted with said track rods, means for sliding said file mechanism with said track rods, and means for raising and lowering said file mechanism.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base, a yoke carried by said base, track rods carried by said yoke, file-supporting arms slidably mounted with said track rods, means for moving said arms with said track rods, a file mechanism carried by said arms, means coiiperating with said file mechanism for normally holding the same in an inoperative position, and manual means for throwing said file mechanism to an operative position.

A device of the class described comprising a yoke frame, a plurality of upwardly extending arms carried thereby, track rods carried by said arms, a plurality of file-supporting arms slidably mounted with said track rods, file-lifting arms carried by said supporting arms, means for holding said lifting arms together, a coil spring engaging said last mentioned means and one of said track rods for normally holding said lifting arms in an inoperative position, and file-supporting arms carried by said lifting arms.

A device of the class described comprising a yoke frame, a plurality of up wardly extending arms carried thereby, track rods carried by said arms, a plurality of file-supporting arms carried by said track rods, file-lifting arms carried by said supporting arms, means for holding said lifting arms together, a coil spring engaging said last mentioned means and one of said track rods for normally holding said lifting arms in an inoperative position, said lifting arms provided with rearwardly extending fingers, adjustably mounted file clamps carried by said fingers, and a file carried by said clamps.

A device of the class described comprising a yoke frame, a plurality of track rods supported thereby, supporting arms fixed upon said track rods, lifting arms carried by said supporting arms, a file carried by said lifting arms, a link connected to one of said supporting arms, an operating arm pivotally carried by said yoke frame and connected to said link, and means connected to said last mentioned arm for facilitating the swinging thereof'and the reciprocation of said supporting arms with said track arms, and means for throwing said file to an operative position.
6. A device of the class described comprising a support, an operatingshaft, an operating wheel carried thereby, an operating crank carried by said wheel, a reciprocating file mechanism supported upon said support, means for normally holding the same in an inoperative position, a cam carried by said wheel, a tripping finger pivotally mounted upon said support and traveling upon said cam, and said tripping finger engaging said file mechanism for manually throwing the same to an operative position as said wheel is rotated.
7. A device of the class described comprising a support, a main shaft carried by said support, a file mechanism reciprocably mounted upon said support, means for normally holding said file mechanism in an inoperative position, a wheel carried by said shaft and tripping means actuated by said wheel, and means connected to said wheel for reciprocating said file mechanism upon said support.
8. A device of the class described co-m prising a support, a main shaft carried thereby, a file mechanism, a coil spring for rod and adapted to lift the same upwardlyfor throwing said file mechanism to an operative position, a link connection between said file mechanism and said wheel, and a crank carried by said wheel for facilitating the operation of said wheel and the reciprocation of said file mechanism.
