PUNCHING-MACHINE.
To all 'whom it may concern:
lle it known that l, Enwaan .lannainin a citizen of the United States, residing at Volta, in the county of Merced and State of California, have invented a new and useful Punching-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in punching machines.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of punching machines, more especially that shown and described in Patent No. 940,575, granted to me Nov. 1G, 1909, and to increase the power or leverage of the machine, whereby the une may be operated with greater ease and rapidity.
Another object of the invention is to increase the strength and durability of the machine and relieve the saine of side strain in the operation of the actuating cam, and to increase the efficiency of the adjustalile clamping means for holding` the sheet metal or other material operated on.
A further obj-ect of the invention is to equip the machine with adjustable reversible guides, adapted to enable the material to be readily set in proper position for punching a plurality of rows of holes.
lith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter' fully described, illustrated in the acconipanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it beingl understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the punching machine comprises in its construction a slidable frame l and a track 2, designed in practice to be suitably secured to the top 3 of al bench, or other suitable sup.- port and to be of a length to accommodate the work to be operated on.
The punching machine may be of any size and weight to adapt it for punching holes in various kinds of material, and the track, which may be of any desired length, consists of a vertical flange l and a horizontal supporting flange 5, the vertical fla-nge being provided in its upper edge at regular intervals with notches 6, forming teeth having inclined edges and vertical shoulders, adapted to be engaged by a dog 7 of the feeding mechanism hereinafter described. rlhe horizontal flange, which forms a support for the slidable frame l, is provided at intervals with openings 8, which may be any desired distance apart and which are designed to permit the metal punched from the material to fall through the machine. The horizontal flange is preferably spaced from the upper face of the top 3 of the bench by blocks or washers t), arranged on bolts l0, or other suitable fastening devices for securing the track 2 to the bench.
The slidable frame, which may be constructed of any suitable material, includes front and rear spaced plates 1l and l2, arranged vertically and receiving the vertical flange 4; of the track between their lower portions. The rear plate l2 is provided at its lower end with a forwardly extending horizontal flange 13, which engages beneath the horizontal flange of the track at the back thereof, The front plate ll is provided at its lower end with a horizontal base let, arranged upon the horizontal supporting portion of the track and provided at the outer edge thereof with a depending rearwardly extending approximately lfshaped flange l5, engaging beneath the horizontal flange of the track at the front thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. By
this construction the frame of the punch is Y engages the beveled upper end of the punch slidabl)v interlocked with and is adapted to move along' the track. The slidable frame is actuated by an upright oscillatory operating lever 1G, fulcrumed at an intermediate point in the slidable frame by a pivot 17 and connected above the fulcruming pivot 17 with a cam actuating lever 18 by links 19.
he links 19 are spaced apart to receive the upper arm of the operating lever and the cam actuating arm or lever, and they are connected to the said parts by bolts, or other suitable pivots. The lower arm 2O of the operating lever 1G is provided with a pin or pivot 21, arranged in a longitudinal slot 22 of the dog 7. The dog 7, which is provided at its front or outer end with a depending bifurcated engaging portion or tooth 23, straddles the upper edge of the vertical tlange of the track and successively engages the shoulders, formed by the notches 6. lVhen the lever is oscillated forwardly in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the slidable frame is advanced along the track, the distance being regulated by an adjustable pin or key 24 and a plurality of perforations 25, which permit the pin to be arranged different distances from the fixed stop 26 for limiting the backward movement of the operating lever. The backward movement of the upper arm or handle portion of the operating lever swings its lower arm 20 forward and advances the dog 7 along the track. The xed stop 2G is preferably formed by one of the bolts, or other suitable fastening devices for connecting front and rear plates of the slidable frame, spacing sleeves being arranged on the bolts for maintaining the front and rear plates in proper spaced relation.
The punch 2 is mounted in vertically alined guide openings of upper' and lower arms 28 and 29 of a bearing bracket or support, which is in the form of a casing, being composed of inner and outer upright members 80 and 31, the horizontal arms 28 and being preferably formed integral with the inner plate or member 30 and located at a point intermediate of the ends thereof and at the lower terminal of the same. The inner member 30 is riveted or otherwise secured to the outer face of the plate 11, and the outer member is secured by screws 32 to the arms 28 and 29, the upper arm being fitted in a groove in the inner face of the outer member 31. The members 30 and 31 are pro 'ided near their upper ends with opposite alined bearings for the reception of spaced rounded bearing portions 34 of a punch operating cam 35, arranged above and adapted to engage the upper end of the punch 27 as clearly illustrated in Figs. and 4 of the drawings.
The punch is beveled at its upper end, and the cam, which depends from the pivot,
in its forwardly swinging actuating movement. The supporting of the outer end of the cam by the outer member 31 relieves the cam and the machine of side strain, and by making the bearing bracket or support of the requisite strength, the machine may be constructed for punching relatively thick sheet metal or other material. The inner and outer members 30 and 31 are provided at the top with suitable oil holes or passages, extending to the bearing openings and hinging the pivot of the cam to be lubricated. The bearing portions 34 constitute an integral pivot, which is also provided with a flattened oblong portion 36, located between the inner and outer plates of the slidable frame and arranged in an opening 37 of the arm or lever 18, which is preferably fixed to the pivot of the cam by a set screw 38. The screw 38 detachably connects the arm 18 with the pivot of the cam, but any other suitable means may be employed for this purpose. The pivotis provided at this side of the arm with a terminal reduction 39, which fits in a bearing opening of the rear plate 12. The terminal portion 39 of the pivot is pierced by a pin or key 40, located at the outer face of the rear plate 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The arm 18 may be of any length to secure the desired leverage or power for operating the punch, and an easy and rapid operation of the same i's thereby secured.
The punch is provided at its lower end with a reduced port-ion 41, which pierces the sheet metal or other work placed in the machine. Tlie base 14 of the slidable frame carries a detachable plate 42, which is equipped with a die 48, having an opening to receive the lower reduced engaging portion of the punch. The punch is removable from the bearing bracket, being detachably retained in place by a pin or key 44, located at the upper portion of the punch and engaged by a coiled spring 45, disposed on thcl punch and interposed between the pin or key 44 and the lower arm 29 of the bearing bracket. The die, which is constructed of tool steel, or other suitable material, is fixed in an opening of the plate 42, and it projects above the upper face of the same and is supported by a lower washer 46. The die plate 42 is detachably secured to the base 14 by inverted screws 47, piercing the base 14 and the plate 42 and having their heads countersunk in the lower face of the former. /Vhen it is desired to remove the die and the punch, the slidable frame is disengaged from the track by sliding it o one end thereof. The die 43 and its plate 42 are then detached and the punch may be removed through an opening 48 in the base 14. The opening 48 registers with the openings 8 of the top, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 to 4 inelusive of the drawings. The die and the punch may be changed for other sizes.
When the handle portion of the operating lever is thrown forward, the pin or pivot moves the distance of the slot 32 before actuating the slidable frame, and this independent movement of the o erating lever is sufiicient to carry t-he cam 'rom the upper end of the punch and permit the same to be raised clear of the work by the spring before the machine is advanced along the track. The punch is act-uated in its operation on the sheet metal or other material during the rearward movement of the upper arm of the operating lever and while the dog is moved forwardly along the track. The dog is maintained in engagement with the upper edge of the vertical flange of the top by means of a spring 49, provided at its upper end. with an eye 50 arranged on one of the transverse fastening devices, which connect the front and rear plates of the slidable frame. The spring is provided at an intermediate portion with a bend, and its lower portion, which is free, engages the upper edge of the dog near the outer or front end thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. rlhis insures a positive engagement between the tooth 23 of the dog 7 and the shoulders formed by the notches of the track.
The punching machine is adapted to operate on sheet metal or other suitable material of any width or length within its capacity, and it is equipped with stationary and adjustable clamps 50Z1 and 51, arranged in spaced relation and adapted to engage a piece of sheet metal or other material at the opposite sides or ends thereof, the adjustable clamp being movable outwardly by the means hereinafter described to enable any kinks or bends in the sheet metal or other material to be readily stretched out of the same, so that the holes will be punched with absolute accuracy. Also this will prevent any creases or bends in the sheet metal from interfering with the rapid and free operation of the punching machine. Each of the clamps comprises a substantially U-shaped body portion, arranged horizontally and having its upper side bifurcated for the reception of a cam lever 52, provided at its lower end with a cam head 53. The cam head 53 is pivoted in the bifurcation 54 and is adapted to clamp the material firmly against the lower side of the U-shaped body portion. The U-shaped body portion of the stationary clamp 50 is secured to the bench by screws 55, or other suitable fastening means.
The adjustable clamp is mounted upon a guide 56, approximately L-shaped in cross section and constructed of angle iron or other suitable material and composed of a vertical flange or wing and a horizontal flange or wing. The horizontal flange or wing, which is secured by screws 5T, or other suitable fastening devices to the bench 3, is mounted upon a supporting` plate or piece 58, and it is provided at its angle with a groove 59, formed in the lower face of the guide and engaged by a horizontally projecting flange of a plate 6l, secured to the rear face of the clamp at the outer end thereof, whereby the adjustable clamp is slidably interlocked with the guide. The clamp is provided at its rear face with a longitudinal groove or recess (32, located at the bottom of the clamp, as clearly shown in Fig. S of the drawings, and receiving the vertical flange or wing of the guide 5G. The plate 6l is secured by screws or other suitable fastening devices to the adjustable clamp, which is seated upon the horizontal supporting or attaching flange or wing of the guide.` The adjustable clamp is provided at the outer end with a horizontal threaded opening 63 and is engaged by a screw 64, mounted upon an Aadjustable member or support 65, which is slidably interlocked with the guide 5G.
The adjustable member or support, which is approximately L-shaped, is slidably arranged upon the guide 5G and is provided at the inner or rear face with a longitudinal groove or recess GG, which receives the vertical flange or wing of the guide, as clearly shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings. The adjustable member 65 is slidably interlocked with the guide by means of a plate G7, secured by screws or other suitable fastening devices to the rear side face of the said member 65, and provided at its lower edge with an inwardly extending horizontal flange CS, which lits in the longitudinal groove or recess 59 of the guide. The opening G3 extends entirely through the outer portion of the adjustable clamp, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and the screw is swiveled to the upwardly extending portion of the L-shaped adjustable member, being provided with a smooth outer portion 69, which pierces the said upwardly extending portion of the adjustable member. rlfhe screw is provided at the inner end of the smooth portion (39 with a collar 70, and its outer end has a head 7l, which is bifurcated for the reception of an ope 1ating handle 72, secured in the bifurcation by a suitable pivot 73, and adapted to be arranged at an angle to the screw to enable th-e same to be readily rotated to stretch the material to the desired tension. The vertical flange or wing of the guide is provided at intervals with perforations 74 for the reception of a transverse pin 75, carried by the adjustable memb-er Geiand adapted to secure the latter in fixed relation with the guide. The adj ustable member Gil is provided with a 'transverse opening for the removable pin 75,
and in applying the adjustable clamp to the material, the member G-i to which the clamp is connected is adjusted along the guide and is secured to the same by the said pin to effect the preliminary adjustment of the clamp 51. The adjusting screw is then rotated to stretch the material and to effect the pivotal adjustment of the said clamp 5l.
The punching machine is equipped with detachable gages 7G, consisting of plates provided with vertical slots 77, extending upwardly from the lower edges of the plates to permit the latter to straddle the vertical flange or wing of the track, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The vertical slot 77 is located at a point between the center of the gage 76 and to one side thereof, so that the distance is greater between the slot and one side edge than the other. The gages are adapted to be placed upon the vertical flange or wing of the tack at different points along the same and they present smooth edges or faces to the said flange or wing, and are utilized when it is desired to punch two rows of holes. The material is fitted against the guides, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. l for arranging the said material in proper position for the first row of holes, and after the same has been punched, the material is removed from the clamps and the gag-es are reversed to space the material for the second row of holes. In starting the latter, the punch is arranged to operate opposite the intervals of the holes already punched. This will enable two rows of holes to be punched comparatively close to the edge of the material. rl`he gages, however, may be provided with a greater number of slots for enabling two or more rows of holes to be punched.
The machine is arranged for operation by sliding the frame with its punching mechanism back to the end notch or recess, and the dog is engaged therewith. The operating lever is then swung forwardly until the slidable frame is carried forwardly as far as it will go with the one movement of the lever. The gages are then arranged on the vertical iiange or wing of the track, one in advance and one in rear of the dog, and the material is fitted against the gages and is engaged by the clamp, the screw of the adjustable clamp being adapted to stretch the ma.- terial to remove all slack and take out any kinks or bends, which might interfere with the rapid operation of the punching machine or the accuracy thereof. The rear- Yard movement of the upper arm of the operating member advances the dog and simultaneously actuates the punch in the downward movement thereof for engaging the material. The forward movement of the upper arm of the operating lever permits the punch to move upwardly and also advances the slidable frame. The upward movement of the punch occurs while the pivot 2l at the lower end of the operating lever is traveling rear vardly from the front end of the slot- 92 to the rear end thereof, and the forward movement or advancement of the slidable frame does not begin until the punch is entirely clear of the material. The actuating arm of the cam and the operating lever afford a double leverage in actuating the punch in the downward movement thereof and enables the necessary power to be easily obtained for adapting the machine to the character of the work to be performed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A punching machine including a track, a frame slidable along the same, a punch carried by the frame, an upright operating lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point in the frame, feeding means connected with the lower arm of the lever, a cam for actuating the punch provided with an upwardly extending arm, and a link connecting the arm of the cam with the upper arm of the lever.

A punching machine including a track, a frame slidably mounted on the track, a punch carried by the frame, an operating lever, a dog pivotally connected to the operating lever and engaging the track, a spring carried by the frame and bearing against the dog for holding the same in engagement with the track, and means operated by the lever for actuating the punch.
A punching machine including a track, a frame slidable along the track, a punch carried by the frame, an upright operating lever including upper and lower arms, a dog connected with the lower arm of the operating lever, a cam for actuating the punch having an upwardly extending arm connected with the upper arm of the operating lever, and a spring carried by the frame and bearing against the dog for maintaining the same in engagement with the track.

8. punching machine including a track, a frame slidable along the same, an upright bearing bracket composed of inner and outer members provided at their upper portions with alined bearings, and horizontal arms formed integral with one of the members and secured to the other member, a punch located between the members and guided in the said arms, a cam located above the punch and having a pivot journaled in the said bearings, an arm connected with the said pivot, an operating lever pivoted in the frame and connected with the said arm, and means actuated by the operating lever for feeding the frame along the track.
9. A punching machine including a track, a frame slidable along the track, a detachable punch mounted on the frame, a die located beneath and cooperating with the punch, a removable plate carrying the die and detachably secured to the slidable frame, and means for operating the punch.

A punching machine comprising a track provided with teeth, a punch mounted on thc t'rame, clanuiing means for holding the work, a gage detachably seated on the track and presenting smooth faces to the same and reversible to present different portions to the work, and punch operating mechanism including feeding means engaging the teeth of the said track to move the frame along the same.
11. A punching machine including a track, a frame movable along the track and provided with a punch, clamping means for holding the work, and spaced gages detachably fitted on the track and adjustable to different positions on the same and reversible to present different portions to the work.

A punching machine including a track, a frame movable along the track and provided with a punch, clamping means for holding the work, and a gage having a slot to detachably fit the track, said slot being arranged at a point between the center and one side of the gage and the latter being reversible to present different portions to the work.
13. A punching machine including a track having an upwardly extending fiange, aframe movable along the track and provided with a punch, clamping means for holding the work, and a gage provided with a slot to receive the flange of the track and straddling the same.

A punching machine including a track, a frame movable along the track, punching mechanism carried by the faune, a fixed clamp, a guide, an adjustable clamp slid-ably interlocked with the guide, an adjustable member also slidably interlocked with the guide, means for securing the adjustable member to the guide, and means for adj ustably connecting the said, member with the adjustable clamp.

A punching machine including a track, a frame movable along the track, punching mechanism carried by the frame, a fixed clamp, a guide having an upwardly extending flange and provided with a groove, an adjustable clamp provided with means for engaging the said groove to interlock it with the guide, an adjustable member also having means for engaging the said groove, an adjusting screw connecting the adjustable clamp with the member, and means for adjustably securing the latter to the guide.

A punching machine including a track, a frame movable along the track, punching mechanism carried by the frame, a fixed clamp, an approximately L-shaped guide having an upwardly extending flange and provided at its angle with a groove, an adjustable clamp receiving the upwardly extending liange of the guide, a plate secured to the clamp and having a projecting portion fitting in the groove of the guide, an
adjustable member detachably secured to the guide, and a screw for connecting the adjustable member with the clamp.
19. A punching machine including a track, a frame slidable along the track, punching mechanism carried by the frame, a fixed clamp, an approximately L-shaped guide having an upwardly extending flange and p`rovided at its angle with a longitudinal groove, an adjustable member having a longitudinal groove to receive the flange of the guide, a movable clamp also provided with a groove to receive the lange of the guide, plates secured to the movable clamp and to the said member and engaging the groove of the guide for slidably interlocking the movable clamp and the member with the said guide, and means for adjustably connecting the movable clamp with the member.
20. A punching machine including a track, a frame movable along the track,
punching mechanism carried by the frame, a xed clamp, a guide, a movable clamp slidably interlocked with the guide, an approximately L-shaped member also slidably interlocked with the guide and having an upwardly extending portion, a screw engaging the clamp and having a smooth outer portion piercing the upwardly eX- tending portion of the said member, said screw being provided at its outer end with a head and having a collar spaced from the head, the upwardly extending portion of the member being located between the head and the collar, and an operating handle pivotally connected with the head of the screw.
