Be it known that I, WALTER C. EIorIEL- Bnnann, a citizen of the United States, and resident of lVestBend, in the county of iVashington and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Folding Machines for Pocket-Book Bodies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My present invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for folding the edges of the bodies of pocket books, particularly that class which have hinged metal jaw pieces secured to the edges of the bod die of the principal objects of the inven tion is to provide a very simply constructed machine whose operation will be very efficient and speedy.
An additional object is to provide a machine, the parts of which are so arranged that the edges of the piece of work naterial being operated upon will be simultaneously forced inwardly into the proper position and pressed between a heating member and a movable body member normally supporting the material.
A still further object is to provide a novel arrangement of bending plates and means for quickly actuating the same.
With these and many other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the embodiment of my machine therein shown includes a bed plate 5 which is held in spaced relation above a table support 6 by depending edge wall portions 7 which serve to house a portion of the folding mechanism. The intermediate portion of the bed plate is downwardly offset to provide a recess 8 for receiving the pocket book bodies to be folded. To adapt the recess for operative reception of various sizes of pocket books, said recess has detachably seated therein the die block 9 the top face of which is flush with the top face of the bed block, this block being provided with a recess 10 the area of which corresponds to the area of the desired size of pocket book bodies when folded.
The edge bending means comprises a pair of flat side bending plates 11 slidable on the bed plate 5 and disposed forwardly and rearwardly of the die block recess 10 and adapted for movement longitudinally of the axis of the machine, these plates being adapted to bend the side edge portions of the pocket book body and being held for proper sliding movement by upstanding guide flanges 12 at the side edges of the body plate 5 and slidably disposed over the end portions of the side bending plates 11 are end bending plates 13 adapted for movement inwardly of the end portions of the recess to bend the ends of the pocket book body, the plates 11 being provided between the plates 13 at their inner portions with upstanding en- I 13 whereby simultaneous inward movement of all the plates is permitted.

Through the intersection of each set of slots 15, 16, and 17 is passed a bolt 18 projecting below the top wall 5 and hav ng mounted on its lower end a link 19 having its inner end pivoted to and extending tangentially from the peripheral portion of a plate 20 which'is journaled on a bearing sleeve 21 carried centrally by the off set portion of the bed plate 5. Thus upon rotation of the plate 20 the bolts 18 will be simultaneously drawn inwardly and will exert a cam action on the edges of the slots 16 and 17 of the bending plates to simultaneously move said plates inwardly.

Secured to the link and to a pin 24 on the casing is a retractile spring 25 which normally urges the rotative ac- 1 tuating plate 20 to a position wherein the folding plates are in. retracted or initial position. The plate 20 is rotated tomove the bending plates to operative position by a cable 26 secured to the arm 22 and extending forwardly of the machine and about a pulley 27 at its forward end and thence downwardly for attachment to a pivoted treadle 28.

A flat holding plate 58 is placed on the body member and pressed to force the body mem bar into therecess 10, this plate being of but slightly less area than the area of the recess whereby the pocket book body and plate are frictionally held by their disposition in the recess this phase of the operation being indicated in Fig. 6. During these pressing operations the treadle 56 controlling the hook 53 is released and upon the pressing operation being completed the handle 45 is swung backwardly lifting the heating and pressing block 35 and the folded pocket book body is removed, the plate 58 being subsequently detached therefrom.
In removing the die block 9 for replacement of another die block having a different shaped recess 10 to accommodate pocket book bodies of difierent shape it is obvious that it is necessary also to provide substitute sets of plates 11 and 13 and substitute false bottoms 29.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of my invention it is obvious that under differing conditions of use various modifications may be resorted to, hence the spirit of the invention is limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A machine of the class described comprising a body plate provided with a recess, means for holding the sheet of work material in the recess, means movable inwardly of the recess for bending the edge portions of the sheet of work material, means for actuating said bending means, a false bottom in said recess, and means for moving said false bottom toward the mouth of said recess simultaneously with actuation of said bending means to feed the edge portions of the work material to said bending means.
2. A machine of the class described comprising a body plate provided with a recess, means for holding a sheet of work material in the recess, a pressing member movable toward and away from the body plate, means movable inwardly of the edges of the recess for bending the edge portions of a sheet of work material, means for holding the pressing member in an intermediate position adjacent the body plate in such manner as to guide the work material during actuation of the said bending means, a movable false bottom in the recess and means for moving the false bottom to afford a support for the work material upon the application of the press ing member thereto.

A. machine of the class described comprising a bed plate provided with a recess, means for holding a sheet of work material in the recess, means movable inwardly of the recess for bending the edge portions of the sheet of work material, a pressing member movable toward and away from the body plate, said pressing member including a portion movable outwardly thereof, and means for holding said movable portion in outward position and adjacent the bed plate to form a guide for the work ma terial upon actuation of said bending means.

A. machine of the class described comprising a body plate provided with a recess, means for holding a sheet of work material in the recess, a pair of plates slidable on the body plate and movable inwardly of the edges of the recess, a second pair of plates slidable on the first plates and movable inwardly of the edges of the recess, means for simultaneously moving said plates inwardly, and upstanding enlargements on the undermost bending plates having their top faces flush with the top faces of the uppermost plates.
5. A machine of the class described comprising a bed plate provided with a recess, means for holding a sheet of work material in the recess, a pair of plates slidable on the body plate and movable inwardly of the edges of the recess, a second pair of plates slidable on the first plates and movable inwardly of the edges of the recess and means for simultaneously moving said plates inwardly, said means comprising diagonal slots in the bed plate. slots in said pairs of plates intersecting said diagonal slots, bolts projecting through said slots and means for moving said bolts inwardly.
6. A machine of the class described comprising a bed plate provided with a recess, means for holding a sheet of work material in the recess, a pair of plates slidable on the body plate and movable inwardly of the edges of the recess, a second pair of plates slidable on the first plates and movable inwardly of the edges of the recess and means for simultaneously moving said plates inwardly, said means comprising diagonal slots in the bed plate, slots in said pairs of plates intersecting said diagonal slots, and bolts projecting through said slots, a plate rotatably mounted centrally of the bed, links pivoted to said rotatable plate and to the bolts and means for rotating said rotatable plate.

A machine of the class described comprising a body plate provided with a recess, means for holding a sheet of work material in the recess, means movable inwardly of the recess for bending the edge portions of the Work material, a pressing member movable toward and away from the body plate, said pressing memberhaving a recess in its lower face, a block slidable in said recess, a leaf spring secured to said block and attached to the member to hold the block in retracted position, a bar pivoted to the body plate and slidable through said pressing member, said bar engaging said block to move the same independently of the pressing member, and means for holding said bar stationary with respect to said body plate.
