Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS LORTON AND JOHN S. DAVISON, OF CRANBERRY, JERSEY.
-IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-BAG MACHINES.
Sepcication forming part of Letters Patent Nc. 105,099, dated July 5, 1870.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, NICHOLAS LOETON and JOHN S. DAvrsON, of Cranberry,l in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Bag-Folding Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective View of our machine. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. et is a vertical cross-section of the pastetrough and roller, showing the brake-spring.
This invention relates to a machine for fold ing and pasting paper bags from blanks previously cut and fed to the machine asrequired; and it consists, first, in the former and its oonnected mechanism; second, in the construction and arrangement of the devices for operating the pasters, folders, Snc. v
That Others may understand our invention, its construction, and mode of operation, we will particularly describe it.l l
rEhe operative mechanism of the machine is supported by the strong frame A A.
The folding-table is composed of movable slats B B, which may be adjusted, as may be required, tO conform tothe width of the former and to fold bags of different widths.
The edges and end of the bag are folded by means of aps D D', which are hinged to the side and end of the folding-table, and operate in a manner similar to the corresponding parts of envelope and other folding machines. The uniform size of the bags, however, is secured by means of a sliding pattern or former, E, which is brought forward over the blank after the same has been laid upon the folding-table, and the paper is bent or folded over in conformity to its size.
The former E is made to be easily removable from its carriage I, so that a variety of formers may be employed, and the same machine may fold bags of different sizes.
The former carriage I slides in a way or groove prepared for it beneath the table C and behind the folding-table, and it is pushed forward and backward by a lever, F, operated by a strap, G, and treadle H.
rlhe lever F is connected to the former-carriage I by a link, J, pivoted to said lever at one end, and to the carriage I at the other.
The lever Fis mounted on a shaft, K, which has its bearings in the side bars of the frame A, and the spring L, or some equivalent de vice, is employed to retract said lever and the former after they have been brought into operation by the treadle H.
The flaps D D are operated by means of straps M M, which pass from the treadle N over the pulleys O O, at the ends of said flaps. Said straps, or continuations of them, extend over the pulleys O and are joined to the spring P, by means of which the flaps are withdrawn after having' been actuated by the treadle N.
A pasting device is attached to one side and e to the end of the foldingtable, by 'means of which the necessary edges of the blanks are pasted before being folded. The device for pasting the end-flap is peculiar in its construction and is not represented in the drawing, as it is reserved for a separate application for Letters Patent.
The side-pasting device consists of a paste- I trough, Q, with a paste-roller, R, located on that side which is toward the machine. Said roller dips into the paste, and is partiallyT rotated every time the treadle N is depressed, by means of a strap, S, which is connected to said treadle at one end, and, passing over a pulley at one end of the roller R, descends to a spring, T, which retracts said strap when the treadle N asccnds.
A stop of anyl kind may be interposedv to prevent a backward movement of the roller It, so that, as the treadle ascends, the strap S will slip over its pulley, and as it descends the roller will be rotated.
It is found that a small pressurebrake or spring, R', is suflicient for this purpose. The
tension of the strap S upon its pulley is very slight during the upward movement of the treadle. A suitable scraper, which may be made adjustable, is placed above the roller R to equalize the quantity of paste taken over by the roller.
As the blank is laid upon the folding-table, one edge is presented just over the pasteroller. 'lhe treadle 'H is then depressed to bring the former E forward over the blank, and while being so depressed a pin, h, set in said treadle at the proper point, engages with a spring-latch, U, which is attached to a slide, V, and said slide is drawn downward with the treadle.
The slide V is connected with a presser.
plate, W, by'a strap or wire, q', and the depression ofthe treadle, therefore, causes a depression of the presser W at the same time, and the edge of the blank is thereby pressed downA upon the paste-roller, and is sure to receive its proper quantity of paste.
.It is not, however, desirable that the presser should remain i'n contact with the pasteroll, and a trip, Y, is therefore arranged to disengage the springlatch U and allow the slide4 V to ascend before the treadle H has finished its downward movement, so that the presser W merely makes a quick movement tof press the blank upon the paste-roll and is immediately released.
The blank having been laid upon the table, pasted, and the former drawn over it, the treadle N is depressed, and the aps D D' are thereby caused to fold the blank. The aps D D' are so arranged that the pasted edge of the blank is folded slightly in advance of the opposite edge, and the flap D' is provided with a ilexible plate, d, on its face, by means of which a more effectual pressure is brought to bear upon the edges to be united, and the folding of the bag is completed. The treadle N is then released, and the aps D D' are retracted. When this has been accomplished, the treadle H is also released and the former E is retracted by the spring L. The bag would then be left upon the table, were not an automatic flier, C', arranged to remove and deposit itupon the table C.
The flier C' consists of arms of wire set in a shaft, E', which rests in bearings above the table C, and transverse thereto.
Thearms C' are bent so as to extend under `the former E, and rest between the slats of the table B when at rest.
. The tliershaft E' is actuated by means of a latch, F', attached to said shaft by a strap,
G', and actuated by engagement with an arm,
H",` set in the lever F. f ,y The strap G' passes from the shaft E under Va pulley, p, and thence in a horizontal direcas said lever returns when said former is reu i tracted, the arm H' engages with said latch after the former has passed entirely beneath the table C, and for this purpose a little extra movement of said formeris necessary. As the lever F and arm H' continue to move backward after the engagement with the latch F', the latter is retracted also, and the ilier C' is actuated, but the latch slips off the arm H', or is tripped `by the bridge-bar J' before said arm has finished its stroke, and the flier, being thus liberated, is returned to its position on the folding-table by the spring q, and the movements having all been completed, the machine is ready for the reception of another blank.
It will be Vobserved that weights may be substituted in the place of retractiug'springs wherever the latteriare shown or referred to in this specification and drawing.
In Fig. 2 is shown a leaf or shelf, S', upon which the blanks are placed ready to be fed to the machine.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, is
l. The combination, in a paper-bag machine, of the sliding former-plate E, folding-flaps l) D', and a pasting device, R W, substantially as set forth.
2.- The combination and arrangement of the treadle H, linked lever F, sliding former-plate E, pasting device R W, folding-aps D D', and treadle N, to complete the pasting and folding with two movements, substantially as described.
3. The combination, substantially as described, of the paste-roller R, band S, treadle N, retracting'spring T, and a stop or break, R', to produce a forward rotation only of said roller.
4. The combination, in a paper-bag machine, of a sliding former, E, and a flier, C', for the purpose set forth.
5. The arrangement, substantially as described, of the treadle H, presser W, former E, and flier C', to actuate said devices successively by a single movement of said treadle.
6. The arrangement, substantially as described, ofthe treadle N, flaps D D', and pasteroll R, to actuate said devices with a single movement of said treadle.
