CLARENCE E. BILTON, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
v GEAR-CUTTING MACHINE.
991,464. Specification of I.
Application led April 17, 1909.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. BILTON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Creare Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gear cutting machines, and particularly to that class of machines shown and described 1n patent to Jordan of February 19, 1907,
My present invention is an improvement upon the above mentioned patent and is designed especially for the angular cutting of gears and other blanks, as inl the art of producing worm gears and the like.
I have first sought to produce a heavier and more substantial machine than has heretofore been manufactured by me under the ing mechanism whereby increased power is obtained, and to provide means for supporting the blank at different angles with relation to the cutter so as to produce angular cuts upon the periphery of the blank as before described.
Upon the accompanying three sheets of drawings forming a part of this specification similar characters of re-ference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures and of which,
Figure 1, shows a side elevation of my improved machine, the legs being broken away. Fig. 2, is aplan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a front end view as seen from the left of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4, is a detailed side view of the cutter driving mechanism, shown in Fig. 1, but in a lowered position, and Fig. 5, is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of the slide for supporting the cutter spindle.
In detail 10 represents the bed of the machine which may be supported upon suitable legs and upon the top side of which is formed bearing brackets 11 for a transverse driving shaft 12 that is operated through a worm gear 13, worm 14, clutch 15 and cone This shaft is provided with four cams for operating the several parte etters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1911. serial No. 490,460.
of the machine as will later be'described. To the top side of said bed 10 is also integrally formed a standard 17 in which a reciprocating slide 18 is mounted. The outer cam 19 upon the said shaft 12 engages a roll 20 of the slide 18 in a way to force the slide forward, against the action of a spring 21 secured intermediate of the slide and a bracket 22, which spring obviously serves to hold the slide roll against the cam to insure the ret-urn movement of said slide. It will thus be apparent that the said slide is given a forward and backward movement with each complete turn of the main shaft 12 to reciprocate the cutter.
Upon the forward end of the slide is a head 23 upon which is adjustably mounted a face plate 24 that supports a spindle bracket 25. This bracket is provided with a transverse rib 26 to engage either of the corresponding grooves in the face plate 24 and whereby the said bracket is secured in either of the grooves for the vertical adjustment of the spindle to accommodate different size gear blanks. On the top of the face plate 24 is secured a guide 27 for the engagement of an adjustable pin 28 mounted in the forward end of a lever 29, pivoted at 30 to the standard 17 while the opposite end of the lever is engaged by a cam 31 mounted upon the before mentioned shaft 12.
The operation of the foregoing is such as to depress the said plate 24 and its cutter against the resistance of its springs 32 intermediate of t-he plate and slide, so as to force the cutter down to engage and cut the blank 53 during its forward travel and whereby the said cutter may be released and permitted to rise out of the groove produced in the blank, while returning to its forward position preparatory to making a second cut.
33 represents the cutter spindle which is journaled in the bracket 25 before mentioned, and is provided upon its forward end with a suitable shaped cutter 34. The gear 35 on the opposite end of this spindle as will be noted is mounted in a loop formed by an arm 36 of the bracket 25, which arm serves to support and steady the outer end portion of the said spindle 33. The gear 35 meshes with and is driven through an idler gear 37 mounted upon ay stud 38 carried by and forming a pivot for the connecting ends ofllinks 39 and 40. The forward end of said link 39 is pivotally connected to the out-er end portion of the hub of the arm 36 while the rear end portion of the second link 40 is mounted upon a stud 41 secured to the before mentioned slide 18 and upon which driving pulley 42 is also mounted and thus carried by the slide in its forward and backward travel. A third gear 43 is connected with the driving pulley 42 in a way to be driven thereby and in turn meshes with and drives the idler 37 which as before stated is connected with the gear 35 to drive the cutter spindle. This line of connect-ions therefore serves to provide a separate and independent driving connection for the cutter and permits not only of an increased amount of power therefor but also for a vertical adjustment of the spindle without changing the elevation of the pulley 42, which thus remains at substantially the same elevation with relation to the counter shaft, from which it is driven.
44 represents a tail stock which is adjustably secured through a slot 45 to the bed of the machine being designed for use if needed in connection with an indexing device 46, and is adjustable longitudinally upon the bed with relation thereto.
The indexing device is mounted upon the forward portion of the machine bed and includes means for supporting a gear blank in the required position to receive either straight or angular cuts, and likewise means for shifting the blank a. predetermined dis tance with the completion of each cut and placing it in readiness for the following cut. This device comprises a base plate 47 which is pivotally connected to the bed as at 48 and is provided with bolts 49 that extend through a curved slot 50 of the bed in a way to allow said base to be adjustably swung upon its pivot 48 and secured either in line with the bed and tail stock 44 or at an angle thereto if desired for .instance as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the adjustable base 47 is mounted a bearing 51 in which a spindle 52 is rotatably mounted. The gear blank 53 is secured to the forward end of said spindle through the medium of a clamping nut 54 and in practice should be located above the center of the pivot 48 before mentioned so as to be engaged and operated upon by the before mentioned cutter to perform the successive operations required in order to produce a complete, straight or worm gear as may be needed. To the outer end of the spindle 52 is Vpivoted an arm 55, and secured to said spindle is an index disk 56, the arm carries a pawl 57 to engage the notched surface of the disk to turn the latter by the movement of the said arm. This arm is operated through a pin 58 the head of which engages the underside of the arm in a way to shove it up and turn the disk a specified distance with each turn of the main shaft. The said pin is raised to operate the arm and disk through the medium of the lever 59 pivoted to the stud 60 on the underside of the machine and operated through a second pin 61 by a cam 62 upon the main shaft 12. The said indexing disk is provided with a stop 63 that is slidably mounted in ways of a depending bracket 64 secured to the base plate and is held against the surface of the disk by a small spring 65 so as to normally engage the notches in the periphery of the disk. This stop is withdrawn from said en gagement at proper intervals to release and permit the turning of the disk by the lever connections 66 pivoted to studs beneath the machine bed and operated through a pin 67 and a cam 68 upon the before mentioned shaft 12. The clutch 15 before mentioned is operated through a spring actuated rod 69 mounted in a bracket 7 0 and having its forward end portion 71 hinged so as to permit it to be swung to and fro with the indexing mechanism, as will be apparent from Fig. 2. The forward end of this rod is provided with a notch 72 that is engaged by a trip lever 73 pivoted at 74 to the bracket 64 so that its inner end is disposed across the front of the disk and in position to be engaged and operated by a pin 75 carried by said disk. This pin serves to engage and trip the lever to release the rod with each complete turn of the disk and permits the spring of the rod to actuate the same to operate the clutch and thus automatically stop the rear shaft of the machine. This operation obviously is designed to take effect with the completion of the cutting of each gear, thus not requiring the constant attention of the operator to watch the successive slotting operations.
I-Iaving thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a gear cutting machine, the combination with a bed, a slide mounted thereon, an adjustable bracket mounted upon the slide and having an extended looped arm, a spindle mounted in the bracket and arm and bearing a cutter upon one end and a gear upon the other that operates in the said loop, a pulley and gear carried by a stud on the slide, connections intermediate the spindle gear and pulley gear whereby the former is operated by the latter and permitted to be adjusted with respect thereto.
