Description

@einen .tetra gstwt @Hite JOSEPH COLT() N, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
Letters Patent No. 71,706, dated December 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-POCKETS.
dtlgr .rtetnl nient it' in there trtters stmt .mit makin att uf TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be itknown that I, JOSEPH CoLToN, of New Orleans, in the parish c? Orleans, and State of Louisiana,
have'invented a new and useful Improvement in- Safety-Pocket and Clasp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention rclates to a -new und useful device for protecting money, watches, and other articles of value from the depredations of pickpockets; and it consists in providing a claspof peculiar construction for the pocket, and protecting thepocket itself from being cut open, by inserting wires or wire cloth between the linings of the pocket, as will be hereinafter more fully described. In the drawing-'- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal view ,ofthe pocket with the clasp attached, the outside of the pocket being broken away to show the wire protection.
Figure 2 is a top view, showing the manner in which the clasp is constructed.
Figure 3 is a section of iig. 2 through the line a: a'. I
Figure 4 is a section of the same through the'line y y.
Figure 5 is a section of the same through z z.
Similar letters of reference indicato like parts.
The mouth of the pocket is formed of two semicireular pieces, one within the other, and marked A and B. These two pieces are hinged together at their ends, so that the smaller one, B, shuts within the other when the pocket is closed, while the faces ofthe two pieces are nsh with each other. There is a stop attached to the back of A to prevent B from shutting by this stop, as seen at a.. Another stop is formed by the lower part` of the spring-slide b. C is a piece, which is attached to the back of A, and the springs, which operate on the slides, are placed between the two, as seen'in the drawing. d is the other spring-slide. e is a spring, which is attached to A, thc end of which projects, as seen in fig. 5, so as to throw the jaws A and B apart, when B is liberated from the slides. f is a spring, which is fast at its middle, while its endsengago with both slides, forcing them down with a constant pressure. The slides b and d are raised, as seen in figs. 3 and 4, while the part B is'n place and ready t-o be fastened. To raise thc slide d, it is necessary to crowd in the spring g by pressing upon the head of the pin h.
vIt will thus be seen that each of the slides a and b must be raised before the pocket can be opened, whie would require manipulation took delicate for a pickpocket.
To prevent the pocket from being cut open, and the contents removed by that means, I insert wires or' wire cloth or wire gauze between the outside of the pocket and the lining, or in any other manner', so that the pocket may be protected from the knife thereby.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by. Letters PatentlThe combination of the jaws A B, piece C, slides a, spring-slides b d, springs e f g, pin h, and the pocket, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
