SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,482, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed September 30, 1901. Serial No. 77.141. (No modal.)
To @ZZ w/'tont t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HERMANN RUFFNER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Taura, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knitted or Looped Undergarments, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to knitted or looped body-warmers, and has for its object to make them so that they fit closely to the body or loins of the persons wearing them, even after washing, instead of having a tendency of doubling up at the edges or forming folds, like the body-warmers generally known.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a garment as applied to the body, and Fig. 2 is a rear View of the intermediate part a after the back chas been cut ott and the edges of the part a have been turned outward,s0 as to showtheinside of the strips ed.
In order to retain the elasticity even after Washing and to prevent the edges from doubling up, I connect the front with the back by a pair of side strips a, which are knitted in such a manner that they tend to contract the knitted front and back in a vertical direction and to draw the upper edge toward the lower edge of the same, but possess sufiicient stiffness to prevent the edges of thev body-warmer from doubling up during use,"
and that they will not suffer from washing. The entire body-warmer may form a continuous knitted fabric with a seam in the middle of the back c, the rows of meshes in the front b and in the back being horizontal, while the sides or intermediate strips a have vertical ribs to produce the necessary stiftness. In order to fit more closely to the body of the wearer, the front part is preferably contracted at the ends, so that the front will be become sligthly arched and Wider in the middle than at the ends, as indicated by Fig. l. The front part is preferably doubleribbed or cardigan workthat is to say, with ribs both on the inside and on the outside running in a horizontal direction-While the back is a thinner fabric.
1. A knitted body-warmer consisting of an elastic knitted front having rows of meshes running in a horizontal direction, an elastic knitted back, and a pair of elastic intermediate strips having vertical ribs, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. In a knitted body-warmer, the combination of an elastic front having horizontal rows of meshes, with a knitted back having horizontal rows of meshes, and a pair of verticallyribbed side strips forming with the front and back acontinuous knitted bodice, substantiallyas described.
3. In a knitted body-warmer, the combination of an elastic front consisting of approximately horizontal rows of meshes contracted at the ends, with an elastic back having horizontal rows of meshes in line with those of the front part, and a pair of vertically-ribbed side strips connecting the front with the back, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRIEDRICH HERMANN RUFFNER. lVitnesses:
