This invention relates to harness, and more particularly to a side strap and means for attaching the same.
In harnesses of that character in which the back-strap and saddle are dispensed with it is customary to employ side straps to support the traces and belly-band from the collar and breeching, said straps extending from the ring or pad of the breeching to the collar and being attached to the sides of the collar, so as to come about in line with the points of the shoulders of the animal and rigidly attached to the traces and belly-band. This construction is objectionable because said side straps act to lock the connecting parts of the harness against movement, rendering the harness uncomfortable to the animal and causing galling at the points of the shoulders, owing to the fact that the collar is not allowed to have freedom of movement therewith.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for attaching the side straps in such manner that the parts of the harness may accommodate themselves to the motion of the animal, thereby obviating the abovestated objections to the side straps now in use.
With the above and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, said invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described,'defined in the appended claim, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, inwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the application of the invention to a set of harness. Referring now more particularly to the In carrying our invention into practice we I connect the forward ends of the side straps 5 to the collar-pad 6 and provide each strap with a slide 7 to move freely through an eye or guide-loop 8 on the buckle 9, carried by the belly-band. By this construction the side straps are free to slide instead of being held from longitudinal movement, thereby allowing the collar and breeching to accommodate themselves to the motion of the animal and preventing the collar from galling the shoulders. The harness is thus adapted to fit more comfortably and to yield freely without any liability of the parts becoming displaced.
The forward ends of the side straps are preferably secured at the top of the collar or harness in order to allowthe latter to move more freely and particularly to yield to the movements of the shoulders of the animal,
whereby galling of the points of the shoulders is not liable to occur.
The slide 7 may be of leather, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or it may be composed of a curved metal bar 7, as shown in Fig. 3, the function in each case being the same-i. e., to allow the strap to have free longitudinal play.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of our improved harness appliance Will be readily apparent without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
