Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS F. VAN DE WIELE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLAMP-STRAP FOR SCHOOL-BOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 71,554, dated November 26, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS F. VAN DE WIELE,
of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Straps for Carrying Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an edge view of a book-strap Similar Letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to prevent the strap from indenting or-otherwise injuring the edges of the books when placed around the same; and to this end it consists in providing the straps with adjustable angular plates in such manner that the said plates, being placed upon the edges of the books when the strap is in, use, eflectually secure the desired result.
, To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the draw- A represents a strap or band of any suitable flexible material, and of any appropriate width and length, which is furnished at one extremity with a buckle, a, through which the opposite end of the strap is passed, as shown morefullyin Fig. 1. B represents plates formed of sheet metal, and bent into angular form,
Fig.
with their two parts 0 d at right angles to each other, as represented more fully in Fig. 1, aforesaid. Each extremity of each plate B is furnished at its outer side with a transverse loop, b, by means of which the said plate is attached to the strap A, the said straps pass ing through the loops and over or upon the outer surfaces of the plate B in such manner that theplates may be moved thereon and adjusted to any required distance apart to enable the device to be applied to any desired number of books or to those of any size.
In using the device, it is passed around the books, which are shown in red outline in Fig. 1, with the plates B fitted upon the corners, at the edges of such books, as shown in the figure just mentioned, whereupon the strap is tightened upon the books by means of the buckle a, and the said books may then be carried in the same manner as when confined with an ordinary strap, the angular plates fitted upon the angular corners of the edges -of the books, as just mentioned, effectually preventing the strap from indenting or injuring the same when tightened thereon.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The adjustable angular plates B, in combination with the strap A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
LOUIS F. VAN DE WIELE.
