To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, HERMAN WERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New .Iersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others. skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refi erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica' tion. l

The present invention has reference to improvements in boxes or packages for the stor ing and displaying of manufactured articles;

ticularly to a novel construction of box for the arrangement therein of a water-bottle and its long and flexible piece of tubing, the vai rious parts of the box being arranged in such a manner that the article of manufacture can be easily arranged and held in its proper position within the body of the box against dis placement when displaying the goods in the box to be placed at an angle in a window or While the salesman is showing the goods to a prospective purchaser.

The present invention therefore has for its principal objects to provide a novel construc-Y tion of display-box in which the article is arranged and sold directly with the box to theV purchaser; and, furthermore, this invention has for its further object to provide a neat, cheap, and simply-constructed box for the purposes above stated and provided with compartments in which the usual forms of nozzles to be usedlwith` the flexible tubing may `be placed.

The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of display-box hereinafter fully set forthgand, furthermore,the invention consists in the several novel arrangements and combinations of parts, all of which will be described in detail in the following specifica `tion and then finally embodied in the clauses ofthe claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the Figure l is a planview of the display-box embodying the principles of the present invention, illustrating in connection therewith the manner of arranging the water-bottle and its flexible tubing in their properly-retained positions in the box. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central vertical section of the box, representing a pair of pivotallyarranged retaining members, which normally hold or retain the flexible tubing in its proper position in the box against accidental displacement in their lowered or retaining positions within the body of the box; and Fig. 3 is a similar section of the box, but representing the said pivotallyarranged retaining members in their raised position to permit of the removal or the placing of the article of manufacture in the body of the box. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of the box, taken on line 4 4 in said Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the box with the cover thereof represented in dotted outline.

Similar numerals of reference are employed in all of the said above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In the said drawings the reference character 1 indicates the body of the box, preferably made of cardboard, being formed with the two sides 2 and the two ends 3. The said body of the box may be of any suitable configuration in outline and in its several corners may be provided with an arrangement of triangularly-constructed members or strips 4, forming suitable compartments for the reception of the nozzles or other parts of the article which is to be placed in the box. The said members or strips 4t, owing to their arrangement across the angles in the body of f tomer or when the box and the article of ,manufacture therein are displayed in a store- IOO window the said roll of tubing becomes l uncoiled, and the bottle also, being made of a soft and flexible rubber, will become arranged in an unsightly mass in the lower portion of the box, and thereby presenting an unsatisfactory display of the goods. To avoid these objectionable features, I have provided the box with a retaining device, which permits of the proper placing of the goods in the box as well as the removal of the same from said box and at the same time retains the bottle and the tubing in a neat position in the box, whereby the salesman can more easily show off the article of manufacture to a greater advantage, or the box can be placed at an angle in a show-case or show-window without the least danger of the rubber bottle and its tubing becoming located in an unsightly and ungainly heap in the bottom of the box. In the present construction the said retaining device consists, essentially, of a cross-piece 9, made at its two ends with the downwardly-extending end pieces 10, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. Between the outer surfaces of the said end pieces 10 and the inner surfaces of the sides 2 of the body of the box I have arranged the

13 and 14 of a pair of curved or suitably-bent members or strips 11 and 12, respectively, the said

10, 13, and 14 all being held in their respective positions by means of suitable pins or rivets 15, upon which the said

end portions

13 and 14 of the respective members 11 and 12 are also pivotally arranged, so that the said members 11 and 12 can be made to lie directly within the body of the box, one member on either side of the cross piece or member 9, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, or that one or both the said members 11 and 12 can be moved in the positions represented in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings. To place the goods in the body of the box, the said pivotal members 11 and 12 are made to assume the positions indicated in Fig. 3, which enables a person to place the flexible bottle 7 in a fiat position in the body of the box, the bottle being inserted beneath the said cross piece or member 9, as will be clearly understood. The two members 11 and 12 are then turned from their raised positions (indicated in said Fig. 3 of the drawings) to their lowered positions on either side of the said member 9 to lie directly within the compartment 6 of the box, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1, 2, and 4 of the drawings. The two members or strips 11 and 12 thereby provide an auxiliary or additional compartment 16, (see Fig. 1,) in which the flexible rubber tubing 8 is arranged in a coil, as shown, and is held in such position against accidental displacement by the circular edges of the said members 11 and 12, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of said Fig. 1 of the drawings. Owing to these various arrangements of the parts of the retaining device, the ilexible bottle 7 as well as the coil of tubing 8 will be neatly arranged and held in position in the body of the box and for the proper exhibition of the goods, as has been hereinabove stated.

I am fully aware that some changes may be made in the .various arrangements and combinations of the parts hereinabove described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described and as illustrated in the said drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a display-box, the combination, with the body of a box, adapted to receive an article of manufacture, and the longitudinal sides 2 of the box, of means in said box consisting of a pair of semicircular members, said members extending in opposite directions and forming a circular compartment for the reception ofthe article of manufacture there-j in, and said semicircular members being pivotally attached at their opposite end portions to the inner surfaces of the said sides 2 of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a display-box, the combination, with the body of a box, adapted to receive an article of manufacture, of means in said box adapted to be brought in contact with the said article of manufacture, to retain the same in position against accidental displacement,com prising, a fixed cross piece or member 9 connected with the sides ofthe box, so arranged that the article of manufacture is placed beneath said member, and a pair of other members pivotally connected with the sides of the box, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a display-box, the combination, with the body of a box, adapted to receive an article of manufacture, of a pivotal pin in each side of the box, and a pair of semicircular retaining members pivotally connected with the said pins, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. In a display-box, the combination, with the body of a box, adapted to receive an article of manufacture, of a pivotal pin in each side of the box, a pair of semicircular retaining members pivotally connected with the said pins, and a cross piece or member 9 arranged between the said semicircular retaining members, said piece or member 9 having its end portions also pivotally connected with said pins, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a display-box, the combination, with the body of a box, adapted to receive an article of manufacture, of a retaining piece or IOO IIO

member 9 secured in said box, beneath which the said article of manufacture is placed, and

a semicircular retaining member located on each side of said member 9, adapted to be i 5 raised beyond the body of the box, substantiaily as and for the purposes set forth.
