B. H. SCOTT. GARMENT SUPPORT.
(Application filed Apr. 23 1902.;
(No Model.)
NITED STATES BAPTIST H. SCOTT, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT -SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,406, dated. November 25, 1902.
Application filed April 23, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BAPTIST H. Soorr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garment-supporters, and relates more particularly to improvements in supporters for nether garments and the like. i
The invention has for its main object to provide novel and efiective means for supporting nether garments without providing special fastening means on the latter, which method has been found objectionable, as the fastening means when applied to the nether garments in a manner that it may not be readily detached therefrom is liable to be injured in the laundering of the garment.
Briefly described, my invention comprises a plate having means to permit its being readily attached to the inner face of the waistband of the trousers. This plate is provided at its lower end with bearings,in which is journaled a pintle having a spring-pressed clamp or hook mounted thereon and is adapted to be inserted through a buttonhole provided therefor in the nether garment. This clamp or hook when swung upwardly into position so as to support the nether garment is held against accidental displacement by means of the spring-tongue formed integral with the plate. All this construction will be specifically described hereinafter and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail referonce is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of my improved supporter,showing the same in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the same in an open position. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the device applied in position when supporting the garment.
To put my invention into practice, 1 provide the securing-plate 1, which may be made Serial No. 104,336. (No model.)
of metal or other suitable material, and is preferably provided with a series of apertures 2 to receive the threads 3, by means of which the plate is securely fastened to the inner face of the waistband 4. of the trousers. This I have found to be a convenient and desirable manner of securing the device in position on the trousers, although in lieu of securing the same by stitchingI may attach the plate to the waistband of the trousers by a button having a shank which extends through the opening 5, provided therefor in the plate. The plate 1 at its lower end is formed with bearings 6, which are constructed by forming two parallel slits in the lower end of the plate and extending the same some distance upward into the plate. The material between these two slits is partly cut away at the lower end of the plate, and the remainder of said material forms a. springtongue 7, which has a reduced lower end 8 for the purpose as will presently appear. A pintle-pin 9 is journaled in the bearings 6, and mounted on this pin between the two bearings 6 is a suspension clamp or hook 10, the bearing 11 of which has a notch 12, that is adapted to receive the reduced end 8 of the spring-tongue 7 when the clamp or hook 10 is in the closed position, (shown in Figs. 1 and 3,) whereby said hook is normally held under tension of the spring-tongue 7 and prevented from accidental displacement. The device, as stated, is adapted to be attached to the inner face of the waistband of the trousers, and in the nether garment, near the upper edge thereof, I provide an eyelet or buttonhole 14, through which the suspension clamp or hook 10 is inserted after being swung downwardly moved so as to assume position shown in Fig. 3, in which latter position it is under tension of the spring-tongue 7, which serves to hold the same in such position until such time as downward pressure is brought to bear against the clamp or hook. I may also employ small barbs 15, placed on the plate 1 at each side of the spring-tongue 7, over which the nether garment may be placed, which will assist in holding the same firmly in position, and these barbs may be employed for the suspension of the garment in the event of the buttonhole being torn out or for like causes which would to position, as shown in Fig. 2, and then,
prevent the use of the suspension clamp or hook for the time being. The device may be easily and quickly attached and in practice is made of such a size that it will not be found cumbersome or inconvenient to the wearer.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction with out departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a garment-supporter, a base-plate provided with apertures and at its lower end having a pair of bearings, barbs formed integral with said plate, a suspension clamp or hook mounted on a pintle-pin journaled in the bearings, and an integral spring-tongue carried by the plate and exerting its tension against the suspension clamp or hook to normally hold the same closed, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
